*This short story originally appeared on the Unruly Media Blog in December 2012. I always really liked it and wanted to share it with you guys, because I think a lot of people who grew up in the 80s and 90s can probably relate to what I?m talking about.?
Looking back on my school days, the memories that come back to me time and time again revolve around computers. Oh, how I loved the green hue from those early Apple computers, and later I fell just as hard for the click, clack of the computer keyboards in my typing class.
It?s hard to imagine now, but in those days most people did not have computers in their homes. Luckily, the educators in my school district saw the importance of computer education and did their best to outfit our schools with computer labs. Now as a full-time blogger, I?m not exactly sure where I?d be if it wasn?t for my early exposure to computers and technology.
As I stroll around town editing stories on my iPhone, I sometimes forget that there are still places around the world that are just finally getting computers into their students hands. On a recent volunteer trip to Guatemala with Cooperative for Education, Beth and I helped inaugurate a computer lab at Panajxit Cooperative School and then paired up with students to explored some of the educational software on their workstation. Seeing their wide-eyes and concentrated smiles brought me right back to my elementary school computer lab.
Beth and I both feel that the computers are one of the great equalizers of our society, second only to reading. And because we couldn?t imagine any student not having access to modern technology like we had growing up, we decided to a raise $2,000 to bring two new PC workstations to the Panajxit school.
