Police: 22-year-old woman a 'person of interest' in Vegas shooting

(Reuters) - Police identified a 22-year-old woman on Tuesday as a "person of interest" in the slaying of an aspiring rapper who was shot and killed while driving his Maserati on the Las Vegas strip and for the deaths of two more people in a fiery crash that ensued.

Las Vegas police said Tineesha Lashun Howard was riding in a black Range Rover with prime suspect Ammar Harris when he opened fire on the Maserati being driven by 27-year-old Kenneth Wayne Cherry Jr. before dawn on Thursday.

Cherry, who performed under the name "Kenny Clutch," was mortally wounded and his silver sports car veered out of control, colliding with a taxicab in an intersection at the heart of the strip, near several casino resort hotels.

Harris, 26, has been the subject of a multistate manhunt since the incident, and police say he has a long criminal history that includes arrests for robbery, sexual assault, kidnapping and soliciting prostitution.

Police believe Harris is "involved in the sex trade," said Las Vegas Metropolitan Police spokesman Officer Bill Cassell.

Harris is described as having several tattoos, including a large black-eyed owl on his neck and small heart on his upper right cheek.

Police officials described Howard as a "missing and possibly endangered individual" from the Miami area.

"She's listed as a missing person," Cassell said. "How she went missing is part of the Miami Police Department's investigation."

Several photos released by the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department showed Howard and Harris together in each others' arms. In one of them they are seen riding in a sport utility vehicle, possibly the Range Rover.

The Range Rover used in the shooting, which bore paper dealer plates, has been impounded by police, but officials have not said where they found the luxury sport utility vehicle. No weapons were recovered from inside.

Earlier on Tuesday, Las Vegas taxicab companies pledged $35,000 toward a reward fund for information leading to the arrest and conviction of Harris.

Authorities say the dramatic shooting in a busy intersection of the desert resort city may have stemmed from a verbal altercation in the valet area of the Aria Resort and Casino a few blocks away on the Strip.

The incident took place less than a mile from where rapper Tupac Shakur was fatally shot in September 1996 while riding in a BMW with Death Row Records co-founder Marion "Suge" Knight after the two men had attended a Mike Tyson boxing match.

Shakur, 25, was hit by gunfire from at least one assailant in a Cadillac while sitting in Knight's car at the intersection of Flamingo Road and Koval Lane and died six days later at a hospital. His murder remains unsolved.

Q&A with Ashley Bell | People's Critic: Film Reviews - seattlepi.com

Actress Ashley Bell took time out to talk about reprising her role as Nell in The Last Exorcism Part 2. We talk about the joy and challenges of playing Nell, working with Eli Roth, and she explains why horror films are great date movies.

Was there any apprehension playing the role of Nell in the Last Exorcism movies?

Ashley Bell: Oh no. It?s such a dream roll for an actress. I come from a theater background. I studied acting at NYU and also the Groundlings in LA. Jumping into a role that was so physically and emotionally demanding was just awesome.

Were there any subtle changes you wanted to make to Nell?s character in The Last Exorcism Part II?

AB: Very much so. With Nell?s character, when I read the script, you think about where she comes from. She?s been broken by the events that have happened in Part 1 and we see this person that?s shattered. She?s putting her life back together and picking up these pieces and there are a lot of pieces missing. There?s a lot of doubt and a lot of questions. In these questions is where the temptation comes in.

You see this arc in the first film of Nell not knowing what?s going on and then all these events start happening. I thought you played that very well. I know that?s tough to give a character layers without much dialogue.

AB: I really appreciate that. Growing up I was a huge fan of horror movies. There?s nothing more fun than going into a movie with a smile because you know you?re going to be scared to death [laughs]. There?s something thrilling about sitting there waiting for a scare to happen. When I saw Part 2 for the first time, people were jumping into each other arms. The film packs a lot of really fun scares. There?s also a real surprise ending. It?s really something only Eli Roth can pull off.

With your families acting background, was acting something you always wanted to do?

AB: Growing up I always wanted to always be something new. I thought if I was an actress, I would have a chance at doing it all. What?s incredible about this profession is every role you play; you learn a different skill set. That really appealed to me.

What was it like working with Eli Roth?

AB: Eli is such a master of the horror genre. He knows it so well, so he can break all the rules. He knows what hasn?t been seen, and how to make a twist to turn a film on its head and surprise audiences. I saw him work in the editing room and he?s like a magician. He knows how to turn a scene that?s scary into something truly horrifying.

I remember that when he did Cabin Fever and Hostile. He really pushed the envelope.

AB: What I loved about the Hostile movies was the revenge element. The characters get revenge and the 13 year old boy in me loves that. Audiences will be surprised when they see The Last Exorcism Part 2, Nell gets revenge.

In Part 2 what was your favorite scene to shoot?

AB: It?s really important to do all of my own physicality. I was important in Part 2 to one up the backbend. There?s a levitating backbend and that?s a really challenging stunt to do. It was one of the most exhilarating days on set. There was a stunt crew and they ok?d me to do it six times and we ended up doing the scene twenty times. Every take was more and more intense. We kept on adding things to it and the crew was involved. It was great. At the end of the day if somebody asked what I did today I could say, ?Well, I flew.? Who gets to say that?

As great as it is to be part of horror films, I?m jumping into a few other genres. I?m coming out in a romantic comedy called The Bounceback that?s premiering at SXSW. I?m also doing an action film called The Marine. It?s straight up action. I?m jumping through windows, cars are exploding, and I run around on an abandoned ship. I?m also stepping behind the camera. This year, I visited Cambodia to do a documentary on elephants called Love and Bananas. You can find out more information at loveandbananas.com.

Anything fans could look forward to in Part 2.

AB: I always say horror films are great date movies. In the first twenty minutes you?re going to end up in each other?s arms. [laughs]

[laughs] That?s a great tip

The Last Exorcism Part 2 opens in theaters on 3/1

Reports of rare superbug jump in US, CDC says

CDC

In the U.S. today, the most common type of highly drug-resistant germs known as CREs are the Klebsiella pneumonia bacteria like those shown here. Nearly untreatable, they're being detected in a growing number of health care settings.

By JoNel Aleccia, Staff Writer, NBC News

A sharp jump in the number of rare but potentially deadly types of a superbug resistant to nearly all last-resort antibiotics has prompted government health officials to renew warnings for U.S. hospitals, nursing homes and other health care settings.

The move comes just as researchers in Israel are reporting that people colonized with dangerous CRE -- Carbapenem-resistant enterobacteriaceae -- can take more than a year before they test negative for the bacteria, making it more difficult to control -- and raising the risk of wider spread.

Reports of unusual forms of CRE have nearly doubled in the U.S., the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported this month. Of 37 cases of rare forms of CRE, including the alarming NDM ?-- New Delhi metallo-beta-lactamase -- 15 have been reported since last July.

?This increase highlights the need for U.S. health care providers to act aggressively to prevent the emergence and spread of these unusual CRE organisms,? the CDC said in a health advisory.

CREs are part of a?family of drug-resistant germs that have shown up in growing numbers of U.S. health care settings. They?re named for their ability to elude carbapenem antibiotics, the big guns in the medical arsenal. They usually strike people who are already ill and require devices such as ventilators or catheters or who have been taking antibiotics for a long time. But they can occur in any patient.

Twenty-nine of the unusual CRE cases have been NDM, up from the first case detected in the U.S. in 2010, said the CDC's Dr. Alex Kallen, a medical epidemiologist and outbreak response coordinator in the agency?s Healthcare Quality Promotion division. It's especially alarming because it confers resistance to multiple drugs and is easily transmitted to other types of bacteria.

The others were even rarer types of CRE, including VIMs, IMPs and OXA-48s, all of which produce enzymes that render most antibiotics virtually useless.

The agency called for stricter isolation and hygiene precautions, increased screening of patients potentially colonized with CRE and better communication within and between hospitals and other health care settings where the bugs can become intractable -- and deadly. CRE infections have a mortality of up to 40 percent, much higher than other health care infections, such as those caused by MRSA or C. difficile.

?Our main objective is to slow or stop the spread in places where we can identify them,? said Kallen. ?Right now, the therapeutic options are very limited.?

Health officials have been worried about them for more than a decade, particularly the KPCs, or carbapenemase-producing Klebsiella pneumonia, which have now been reported in 43 U.S. states, the CDC reports.

Nine states have reported NDMs and at least two have reported other rare forms that also block antibiotic effectiveness, including those known as VIMs, or Verona integron-encoded metallo-beta-lactamase, and IMPs. ?So far, they?ve been associated mostly with people who?ve been hospitalized in countries outside the U.S.

The bugs were in the news last summer after reports of a CRE strain of Klebsiella penumoniae roared through the National Institutes of Health Clinical Center near Washington, D.C., killing seven people, including a 16-year-old boy.

In Colorado last summer, NDM-producing CRE was detected in eight patients, the largest outbreak in the U.S. to date, according to a CDC report this month. It was found largely because the University of Colorado Hospital already has stringent surveillance protocols in place, said Dr. Michelle Barron, director of infection control and prevention. Since then, the hospital has probably tested 500 or 600 patients with unusual resistance patterns, she told NBC News. ?

None of the eight patients in the original outbreak died.?The evidence showed that patients who were colonized with the germs, but not actually sick, contributed to the spread.

That?s a point underscored by the study by Israeli doctors published Wednesday in the American Journal of Infection Control. They studied medical records of adult patients hospitalized between January 2009 and December 2010 at Shaare Zedek Medical Center, a 700-bed, university-affiliated hospital in Jerusalem.

In 97 patients with positive CRE cultures, it took a mean time of 387 days to log a negative test -- and nearly 40 percent remained positive after a year, according to Dr. Amon Yinnon, one of the study authors.

?The major concern is that an undiagnosed carrier may be admitted to hospital for totally unrelated reasons, and subsequently and unwittingly pass his CRE to other patients,? Yinnon said in an email to NBC News.

Patients who were hospitalized repeatedly were at higher risk of remaining colonized with CRE, the study found.

CDC officials hope to increase awareness of the growing problem among the general public as well as the health care providers before it gets out of control.

?I can?t predict the future, of course, but there is a concern that we can see more of these as they spread,? Kallen said. ?This can become a community bug.?

Dubai officials block Bahrain-based AP journalist

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP) ? Two Bahrain-based journalists, including a reporter for The Associated Press, were blocked from entering the United Arab Emirates on Monday under apparent new restrictions by Gulf Arab states.

Reem Khalifa and her husband, Mansoor al-Jamri, chief editor for Bahrain's independent Al Wasat newspaper, said they were told by authorities at Dubai International Airport that they were on a list to deny entry.

No further explanations were immediately given, but it appears part of tighter coordination between Gulf allies to control and monitor journalists, activists and others in the region.

Like all Gulf partners, the UAE has expanded crackdowns on perceived political dissent since the Arab Spring, including charging 94 people last month with conspiring to overthrow the ruling system. But it still remains among the most open countries in the Gulf for journalists, researchers and scholars.

Bahrain's 2-year-old uprising is a critical issue for Gulf leaders, who want to safeguard the ruling families across the region.

Khalifa and her husband ? on a private visit to Dubai ? closely cover Bahrain's struggles between majority Shiites and the Sunni rulers in the strategic kingdom, which is home to the U.S. Navy's 5th Fleet.

Khalifa had visited Dubai last year without incident. Al-Jamri was among the winners in 2011 of the International Press Freedom Award by the Committee to Protect Journalists.

A senior UAE official said airport immigration issues fall under Dubai police, which had no immediate comment. Bahrainis and other citizens from the six-nation Gulf Cooperation Council ? as well as many Western passport holders ? can enter the UAE without a pre-arranged visa.

Bahrain, however, has imposed a special journalist visa that has sharply limited outside media access to the country.

Last week, the UAE also denied entry to a prominent academic from the London School of Economics who was scheduled to speak about Bahrain at a conference on the Arab Spring.

The UAE's Foreign Ministry said Monday that Kristian Coates Ulrichsen was not allowed into the country because his work has been critical of Bahrain's monarchy, which is closely backed by other Gulf leaders. The UAE said "non-constructive" views on Bahrain are unwelcome.

Mediterranean diet helps cut risk of heart attack, stroke: Results of PREDIMED study presented

Feb. 25, 2013 ? Results of the PREDIMED study, aimed at assessing the efficacy of the Mediterranean diet in the primary prevention of cardiovascular diseases, have been published in The New England Journal of Medicine. They show that the Mediterranean diet supplemented with extra-virgin olive oil or tree nuts reduces by 30 percent the risk of suffering a cardiovascular death, a myocardial infarction or a stroke.

The study has been coordinated by the researcher Ramon Estruch, from the Faculty of Medicine of the UB and the Hospital Cl?nic -- affiliated centres with the health campus of the UB, HUBc -- and has had the collaboration of the professor Rosa M. Lamuela and her team from the Natural Antioxidant Research Group of the Faculty of Pharmacy -- located at the campus of international excellence BKC -- which determined the biomarkers of Mediterranean diet consumption.

The research is part of the project PREDIMED, a multicentre trial carried out between 2003 and 2011 to study the effects of the Mediterranean diet on the primary prevention of cardiovascular diseases. The study was funded by the Carlos III Health Institute by means of the cooperative research thematic network (RETIC RD06/0045) and the CIBER of Physiopathology of Obesity and Nutrition (CIBERobn).

A total of 7,447 people following major cardiovascular risk factors participated in the study. They were divided into three dietary intervention groups: a Mediterranean diet supplemented with extra-virgin olive oil, a Mediterranean diet supplemented with nuts (walnuts, almonds, hazelnuts), and a low-fat diet (animal and vegetable). A dietician visited the patients every three months and they attended dietary training group sessions, in which they received detailed information about the Mediterranean and the low-fat diet, and the food included in each one. Moreover, they were provided with shopping lists, menus and recipes adapted to each type of diet and each season of the year.

During the study, those participants who followed any of the two types of Mediterranean diet received freely extra-virgin olive oil (one litre per week), and nuts (30 grams per day; 15 grams of walnuts, 7.5 grams of almonds and 7.5 grams of hazelnuts).

After five years, it has been proved that participants who followed any of the two types of Mediterranean diet showed a substantial reduction in the risk of suffering a cardiovascular death, a myocardial infarction or a stroke.

According to the researchers, the results of PREDIMED study are relevant as they prove that a high-vegetable fat diet is healthier at a cardiovascular level than a low-fat diet. The authors state that the study has been controversial as it provides new data to reject the idea that it is necessary to reduce fats in order to improve cardiovascular health.

Hopefully, these results will provide new references to prevent cardiovascular diseases. In addition, the design and methodology used can be easily transferred to the biomedical sector.

The study had the collaboration of several researchers from the Hospital Cl?nic, the Hospital del Mar Medical Research Institute (IMIM), the faculties of Medicine of the universities Rovira i Virgili, Navarra, Valencia, Canary Islands and Malaga, as well as the University Hospital Son Espases of Palma, the Fats Institute in Seville, and the primary health care networks of Barcelona, Seville, Tarragona and Valencia.

ASUS PadFone Infinity vs. PadFone 2... fight!

ASUS PadFone Infinity vs PadFone 2 fight!

We happened to have a PadFone 2 with us at ASUS' MWC event, so it was only natural for us to put it next to the brand-spanking-new PadFone Infinity for a few photos. Unlike the jump from the original PadFone to the PadFone 2, the latest generation ditches the polycarbonate body with the iconic zen pattern in favor of an aerospace-grade aluminum unibody. Placing the PadFone Infinity and its shorter predecessor side by side you can see that the former is actually slimmer over all, and we dig the premium feel as well. Other notable differences include a new position for the loudspeaker, which is now on the top right side of the bezel instead of the back; and the 13-megapixel camera is now off-center.

You'd think the smaller PadFone 2 would easily fit into the bigger bay in the new PadFone Station (using the same special micro-USB socket), but interestingly, it didn't work for us. We might give it another go when we eventually get hold of a review unit, of course (it's OK, Jonney, we'll be gentle).

New blood test finds elusive fetal gene problem

A NEW non-invasive blood test for pregnant women could make it easier to catch abnormalities before their child is born.

Human cells should have two copies of each chromosome but sometimes the division is uneven. Existing tests count the fragments of placental DNA in the mother's blood. If the fragments from one chromosome are unusually abundant, it might be because the fetus has an extra copy of that chromosome. But triploidy, where there are three copies of every chromosome, is missed, since the proportion of fragments from each chromosome is the same.

California-based company Natera uses an algorithm to calculate the most likely genotype for the fetus. To do this it looks at single letter variations called SNPs in the parents and compares this to a database of the most common SNPs patterns in the population. This genotype is then compared with placental DNA.

This approach can catch triploidy since the whole fetal genotype is the reference rather than a single chromosome. The method was presented last week at the Society for Maternal-Fetal Medicine in San Francisco.

This article appeared in print under the headline "No hiding place for fetal gene errors"

Justices asked to void marriage law provision

(AP) ? The Obama administration is asking the Supreme Court to declare unconstitutional a section of federal law that only recognizes male-female marriages.

In a filing with the court, the administration says Section 3 of the Defense of Marriage Act denies legally married same-sex couples many federal benefits that are available only to legally married heterosexual couples. Federal tax and Social Security survivor's benefits are among them.

In its brief, the administration said the provision "violates the fundamental constitutional guarantee of equal protection."

The brief was filed as the justices prepare to hear arguments next month in a challenge to the 1996 law.

President Barack Obama last year said he personally supports gay marriage. He said in last month's inaugural address that the law should treat gay people like anyone else.

Awesome :) I'm going to add a little bit of info about each animal possibility and add more as they keep going. Also, only a few people are offered up for experimentation willingly, the majority of these kids had no clue what was going to happen to them. Then again some of them were trained and prepared by their fanatical parents. Thanks ^^

This friend would need to help Koda escape from his prison, and befriend him despite his bestial nature. If Koda is to ever go into a rage, this friend would need to be the one to help calm him down, and prevent him from killing everyone.

This friend can be any age, any gender, anything :D UNLESS YOUR PART BIRD. Koda no te gusta birds. (He doesn't like birds) SOOOO ya! Message me if you wanna be his friend!

Plane wreckage may be linked to fashion icon

Daniel Dal Zennaro / EPA, file

Italian fashion scion Vittorio Missoni is shown in a 2009 photo from Milan, Italy. The chief of the Missoni fashion house has been missing along with five others since Jan. 4, when his plane vanished after taking off from the Los Roques resort area en route to Caracas.

By John Newland, Staff Writer, NBC News

Wreckage that may be remains of the missing plane carrying Italian fashion executive Vittorio Missoni and five others has been found off the coast of Venezuela, an Italian official said Friday.

"I can confirm that the wreckage of an airplane has been found off the coast, but we don't know yet whether this was the same airplane that was carrying Mr. Missoni," an Italian Foreign Ministry spokesman said.

The spokesman said Venezuelan authorities were still compiling their report on the finding as of 7:15 a.m. ET Friday, and Italian officials were waiting for more information.

The plane carrying the 58-year-old head of the major fashion house and his family and friends has been missing since Jan. 4, when it took off from the resort area of Los Roques on its way to the Venezuelan capital, Caracas.

Venezuelan Government / AP, file

Venezuela National Civil Aviation Institute search Jan. 9 for a plane that went missing near Los Roques, Venezuela, five days earlier carrying Vittorio Missoni, his wife and four others. Wreckage has been found, but it was unclear early Friday whether it was that of the Missoni's plane.

Luggage belonging to Missoni was found on the tiny island of Curacao, off the Venezuelan coast, about two weeks ago, The Associated Press reported last week.

Seven minutes after the plane took off, the pilot reported that he was at 5,000 feet and 10 nautical miles from the Los Roques airport, the Italian flight safety agency told The Associated Press. The last radar readings showed the aircraft accelerating at 5,400 feet before it quickly lost altitude and speed, veering to the right until it disappeared from the radar.

The Italian Foreign Ministry spokesman said more information about the wreckage was being eagerly awaited in Italy, where the Missoni name is iconic.

"We got the news early this morning from our embassy there [in Venezuela]," he said. "The investigations are ongoing. We are checking whether this was the plane."

In addition to Missoni and his wife, the plane was carrying a Venezuelan couple and two Venezuelan crew members, officials have said.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.

Real estate implosion shows importance of agents | Louisville.com

Print

As we approach the spring real estate market of 2013 cautious optimism seems to be the prevailing sentiment both in Louisville and throughout much of the country. According to data recently released by the Greater Louisville Association of Realtors, 18% more homes were sold in Louisville in 2012 than in 2011. Our firm, Kentucky Select Properties, showed even greater improvement than the overall market with unit sales growth of 49% in 2012 vs. 2011.

I?m no Pollyanna but I think I can safely say that those of us who work in the industry ? and survived likely the most challenging residential real estate market of our lifetimes ? are comparatively bullish about this year and what lies over the near-term home buying horizon.

With the worst behind us, now seems like a good time to consider the lessons from this unprecedented chapter in housing history. Perhaps more importantly what are the fundamental things we learned that should continue to apply even as the real estate market improves?

First and foremost that home values don?t always go up indefinitely (despite the false sense of certainty we were lulled into during the market?s long-term steady appreciation before 2008). I do still believe unequivocally that over the long-term residential real estate in many markets will be as good an investment, if not better, than the stock market. Not to mention, that unlike stocks or bonds, a home provides a functional and emotional benefit to its owners.

That despite the financial inventiveness of some in the mortgage industry, with their ?teaser rates? ?pay-option ARMs? and ?stated income (now affectionately known as liar) loans?, it?s not a good idea to buy a house unless you have the monthly income to afford it and can come up with a meaningful down payment.

A national media obsession with declining home values and mortgage shenanigans has taken up much of the spotlight in the wake of the meltdown. From where I sit though there was another storyline that often went underreported or not reported at all: the role of professional real estate agents in keeping the market on life support until it was stabilized and is now poised to make a real comeback.

I know many of our agents put in twice as much time and energy to bring and keep deals together and made a fraction of the money they did six or seven years ago. Which begs the question: what is the value of a good real estate agent these days? Or to put it more bluntly as a tech-savvy, thirty-something investor did to me recently: ?With all the listings available on the Web, why do I even need a real estate agent anymore??

It?s true that through national websites like Trulia and Realtor.com, as well as local broker sites, most real estate listings are now widely available on the internet for buyers to peruse. Additionally, as my investor friend pointed out, real estate sites like Zillow, and its Zestimate valuation tool, provide copious amounts of sale and tax assessment data with the click of a mouse.

But, I would argue, all this technology, while having its place, has underscored the importance of the guidance and human touch offered by experienced and knowledgeable real estate agents.

Zillow can aggregate publicly available sales data but it can?t tell you which homes in your neighborhood have been professionally remodeled and how much those remodels should translate to in terms of increased market value. That is precisely the kind of information an experienced and competent real estate agent can give you.

Between ever-changing mortgage regulations, epic negotiations over sales (and then again over home inspections), and wacky appraisals, there are more impediments than ever to successfully consummating a home purchase. Throw in the usual headaches of moving and a pair of stressed out clients and today?s real estate transaction promises more drama than a week at Actor?s Theatre.

In a classically efficient market ? whether you?re buying stocks or tchotchkes on eBay ? you?re dealing with a pretty straightforward transaction. Not so in residential real estate which is much more process oriented, and frequently driven by the unpredictable and often irrational emotions of sellers and buyers. Good real estate agents help their clients effectively navigate this unwieldy and sometimes stressful purchase process. This was particularly true during the real estate bust and will likely be one constant as we build toward the next boom.

NFL fantasy: Bills aren?t committed to Ryan Fitzpatrick

Fitzpatrick not guaranteed roster spot: Add the Buffalo Bills to the list of teams facing quarterback issues this offseason. When asked about the future of?Ryan Fitzpatrick, team president Russ Brandon was rather evasive, saying he was ?evaluating every?aspect of the organization.? That certainly doesn?t mean Fitzpatrick will be handed his walking papers, but with the re-signing of?Tarvaris Jackson and speculation that Buffalo will draft a quarterback, there?s little reason for the Harvard product to think his spot as a starter (or even on the roster) is safe. Meanwhile as this all plays out, the fantasy fortunes of?C.J. Spiller?and even?Fred Jackson grow brighter.

Cowboys to add running back: It?s widely believed that the Dallas Cowboys will part ways with?Felix Jones. But lest you think this means the entire running back workload will fall to?DeMarco Murray, think again. Stephen Jones, the team?s executive vice president, says the ?Boys could target a running back in the draft. Murray is proven as a productive option for Dallas, if he can stay on the field; in two seasons, the former Oklahoma standout has missed nine games. Last season, Murray was limited to just 663 rushing yards while the Cowboys as a team ran for 1,265 ? six players ran for more by themselves. Fantasy owners can expect Murray to be Dallas? lead runner in 2013, but if you take a chance on him in the draft, grabbing his handcuff will be imperative.

Chargers considering zone-blocking scheme: New San Diego Chargers head coach Mike McCoy is already looking at ways to boost the team?s inconsistent running game ? and he?s starting with the guys up front. McCoy says the team will occasionally employ a zone-blocking scheme to help?Ryan Mathews. Of course, the offensive line was one of San Diego?s big problems last season, so just changing the blocking schemes might not be enough to help their star-crossed running back change his fortunes. And after three underwhelming seasons, fantasy owners are best left to wait for Mathews to produce before putting any serious faith in him.

HKN-RANGERS-SENATORS

Senators top Rangers in shootout 3-2

OTTAWA (AP) -- Kaspars Daugavins scored in the seventh round of the shootout and backup goalie Ben Bishop picked up the victory in relief of injured starter Craig Anderson and the Ottawa Senators defeated the New York Rangers 3-2 on Thursday.

The Senators lost Anderson at 1:43 of the third period after Rangers forward Chris Kreider was tripped in front and slid into him.

No penalty was called on the play and Anderson had to be helped to the locker room.

The team said that the 31-year-old Anderson, who leads the league with a 1.57 goals-against average and .950 save percentage, has a sprained right ankle and is listed day to day.

The Senators are also dealing with injuries to defenseman Erik Karlsson (Achilles) and center Jason Spezza (back).

Daugavins appeared to mishit his winning shootout attempt that beat Rangers goalie Henrik Lundqvist between the legs. Kreider then needed to score to keep the game going, but he couldn't beat Bishop.

HKN-ISLANDERS-CANADIENS

Hickey's OT goal lifts Isles over Canadiens 4-3

MONTREAL (AP) -- Rookie defenseman Thomas Hickey scored in overtime for his first NHL goal, and the New York Islanders rallied to snap the Montreal Canadiens' five-game winning streak, 4-3 on Thursday night.

Matt Moulson scored twice and Frans Nielsen added a goal in the third period for Islanders (7-9-1), who trailed 2-0 and 3-1 but came back to end a two-game slide and win for the third time in 10 games.

Max Pacioretty had two goals, and Travis Moen added one for the Canadiens (11-5-2).

After going his first 10 games without a goal, Pacioretty has four in three games.

HKN-DEVILS-CAPITALS

Kovalchuk, Elias lead Devils past Capitals 3-2

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Ilya Kovalchuk scored the tiebreaking goal on a 5-on-3 power play with about 8? minutes left to complete the New Jersey Devils' 3-2 comeback victory Thursday night over the Washington Capitals, who have yet to beat any of the Eastern Conference's elite teams.

Washington led 2-1 entering the third period, thanks to power-play goals by Mathieu Perrault and Mike Ribeiro.

Andrei Loktionov made it 2-all midway through the last period, and Kovalchuk dropped to a knee as he let the puck fly to put New Jersey ahead for the first time off Patrik Elias' assist. Elias had scored a short-handed goal in the second period.

The East-worst Capitals dropped to 0-7-1 against the conference's top six teams. They will get another chance Saturday when they host New Jersey again.

HKN-SABRES-MAPLE-LEAFS

Sabres fall to Leafs in Rolston's debut as coach

TORONTO (AP) -- James van Riemsdyk scored two goals to lead the Toronto Maple Leafs past the Buffalo Sabres 3-1 on Thursday, spoiling the NHL head coaching debut of Ron Rolston.

Rolston, who until Wednesday was the head coach of the AHL's Rochester Americans, was hired as the Sabres interim coach following the club's decision to fire Lindy Ruff. Ruff, who also played 10 seasons for Buffalo, had been behind the club's bench since 1997 and was the NHL's longest-tenured head coach.

But the Sabres, who have dropped three straight and five of six, were booed off the ice following Tuesday's loss to Winnipeg.

Van Riemsdyk's power-play goal at 14:28 of the third -- his team-leading 11th -- gave Toronto breathing room after Buffalo goalie Ryan Miller stopped Van Riemsdyk with a fabulous glove save earlier on the power play.

Dion Phaneuf also scored Toronto, which won its third straight home game. Ben Scrivens stopped 31 shots for his third win in five starts since James Reimer's knee injury Feb. 11.

Tyler Ennis scored for Buffalo.

KNICKS MOVES

Knicks trade Brewer to Thunder for pick

NEW YORK (AP) -- The New York Knicks have traded swingman Ronnie Brewer to the Oklahoma City Thunder for a 2014 second-round pick and cash.

Brewer was a starter earlier this season who lost his starting spot -- and eventually his place in the rotation entirely -- after a shooting slump.

Brewer appeared in 46 games, making 34 starts, and averaged 3.6 points and 2.2 rebounds. Signed by New York last summer, he has also played for Utah, Chicago and Memphis.

YANKEES-OUTFIELD

Granderson, Gardner may switch outfield spots

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) -- Yankees outfielders Curtis Granderson and Brett Gardner could be switching positions.

Granderson worked out in left field Thursday and the speedy Gardner switched to center.

Yankees manager Joe Girardi plans to play the pair together in upcoming spring training games.

Says Girardi: "I think it has a chance to help us a little bit, but I'm not really sure. ... That's why I've said from the beginning that I'm going to toy with it."

NATIONALS-YOUNG

Nationals agree to terms with RHP Chris Young

WASHINGTON (AP) -- The Washington Nationals have agreed to terms with right-handed pitcher Chris Young on a minor-league contract with an invitation to major league spring training.

Young is 53-43 with a 3.79 ERA in 159 career starts with the New York Mets, San Diego Padres and Texas Rangers. The 33-year-old Young was an All-Star with the Padres in 2007.

Young went 4-9 with a 4.15 ERA in 20 starts last season with the Mets.

The Nationals announced the deal Thursday.

MLB DRUG INVESTIGATION-WEINER

Weiner says media shouldn't jump to conclusions

PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. (AP) -- Baseball union head Michael Weiner says reporters should refrain from jumping to conclusions about media reports linking players to a Florida anti-aging clinic accused of distributing banned performance-enhancing drugs.

Starting his annual tour of the 30 spring training camps, Weiner cautioned Thursday that Major League Baseball is still investigating Biogenesis of America, a defunct anti-aging clinic in Coral Gables, Fla.

After his one-hour session with the Mets, Weiner also discussed the agreement with management last month to extend blood testing for human growth hormone into the regular season. HGH testing began last year but was limited to spring training.

As part of the changes to the joint drug agreement, the World Anti-Doping Agency laboratory in Laval, Quebec, will keep records of each player, including his baseline ratio of testosterone to epitestosterone.

NFL COMBINE-JETS

New Jets GM says he wants Revis to stay

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) -- The New York Jets want to make one thing perfectly clear: They want Darrelle Revis to stay with the team.

At the NFL's annual scouting combine Thursday, new general manager John Idzik spent the first eight minutes of his news conference addressing Revis questions. He says nothing has changed and the Jets still want him.

The comments come almost a month after Idzik said he called Revis to end rumors that he might be traded.

Coach Rex Ryan says he has told Revis to ignore the speculation, calling the reports "not accurate."

Revis missed most of last season with a knee injury and is still considered one of the league's top cover cornerbacks.

AQUEDUCT

Freud's Notebook wins Aqueduct feature

NEW YORK (AP) -- Freud's Notebook led all the way Thursday, confidently holding off 2-5 favorite Schillerette by 1? lengths in the $57,820 allowance feature for New York-bred fillies and mares at Aqueduct.

Cornelio Velasquez was aboard for trainer Mitchell Friedman as the 6-year-old posted her seventh win in 39 starts. The time was 1:44.50 for the one mile, 70 yards.

Freud's Notebook paid $8.60, $3.20 and $2.40 as the 3-1 second choice. Schillerette returned $2.10 and $2.10 while Erin Enchanted paid $2.40 to show.

LIU BROOKLYN-MOUNT ST MARY'S

Mount St. Mary's upsets LIU Brooklyn 83-71

EMMITSBURG, Md. (AP) -- Rashad Whack scored 26 points and Mount St. Mary's upset LIU Brooklyn 83-71 Thursday night in Northeast Conference play.

The Mountaineers (13-13, 8-7), trailing 42-38 at halftime, outscored the Blackbirds (15-12, 10-5) 45-29 and avenged an earlier 86-72 loss at LIU Brooklyn.

The Blackbirds fell out of a first-place tie with Robert Morris in the NEC.

Whack hit 8 of 15 field goal attempts and 6 of 10 3-pointers. He went 4 for 4 at the foul line. The Mountaineers have won four consecutive games and six of their last seven.

Whack helped give Mount St. Mary's a big edge from 3-point range. The Mountaineers made 11 of 25 treys, while LIU Brooklyn was 3 of 10.

E.J. Reed scored a career-high 25 points for the Blackbirds on 10-of-12 shooting. C.J. Garner added 20 points.

For the Mountaineers, Shivaughn Wiggins chipped in 13 points and Sam Prescott had 11.

WAGNER-ST FRANCIS (NY)

Calloway, St. Francis Brooklyn edge Wagner 76-75

NEW YORK (AP) -- Dre Calloway made a layup with 2.8 seconds remaining to lift St. Francis Brooklyn to a 76-75 win over Wagner on Thursday night in Northeast Conference action.

There were 19 lead changes and 10 ties, including 73-73 with 2:20 left.

After Lowell Ulmer made the second of two free throws to push the Terriers (11-15, 7-8) in front, Latif Rivers' jumper gave the Seahawks a 75-74 lead with 1:33 left. Although Jalen Cannon missed a layup for St. Francis Brooklyn, the Terriers got another chance when Wagner turned the ball over.

Following Calloway's basket, Rivers missed a 3-point attempt at the buzzer.

Ben Mockford's 18 points led St. Francis Brooklyn, which also beat the Seahawks 71-52 on Jan. 12. Travis Nichols added 16 points, Cannon 13 and Calloway 11.

Jonathon Williams scored 16 points to lead Wagner (15-11, 9-6), which came in having won three of its past four games.

MONMOUTH (NJ)-ROBERT MORRIS

Robert Morris defeats Monmouth (NJ) 77-65

MOON TOWNSHIP, Pa. (AP) -- Russell Johnson scored 20 points, Lucky Jones hit six 3-pointers to finish with 19 and Robert Morris led wire-to-wire in a 77-65 win over Monmouth (N.J.) on Thursday night to take sole possession of first place in the Northeast Conference.

Jones was 6 of 7 from the field, all from long range. The Colonials (19-9, 11-4), who have won five of their last six, have beaten the Hawks nine straight times, including 70-55 on Jan. 12.

Monmouth, which trailed by 10, got to 53-52 on a three-point play by Tyrone O'Garro with 10:14 remaining, but could not take the lead.

After Robert Morris built a six-point cushion, the Hawks closed to 62-60 with 5:28 left. The Colonials then finished the game with a 15-5 run.

Karvel Anderson added 14 points for Robert Morris. Johnson, with seven rebounds, now has 704 career caroms.

Jesse Steele's 16 points led Monmouth (10-18, 5-10).

FAIRLEIGH DICKINSON-ST FRANCIS (PA)

St. Francis (PA) downs Fairleigh Dickinson 69-64

LORETTO, Pa. (AP) -- Ben Millaud-Meunier scored 26 points and Anthony Ervin had 22 points and nine rebounds to lead St. Francis (Pa.) to a 69-64 victory over Fairleigh Dickinson on Thursday night.

Millaud-Meunier was 8 of 13 from the field, Ervin 8 of 10 for the Red Flash (4-22, 4-11 Northeast Conference), which lost to Quinnipiac 71-55 on Saturday. St. Francis shot 10 of 19 on 3-pointers.

Kinu Rochford scored 21 points and grabbed 15 rebounds for Fairleigh Dickinson (7-21, 2-13), which beat St. Francis 79-69 in overtime at Hackensack, N.J., on Jan. 12 but has lost 12 straight since.

Trailing 16-8 at the 10:27 mark, St. Francis went on a 13-0 run to lead 21-16 with 6:20 left, capped by Anthony Ervin's four-point play. The Red Flash led 31-25 at halftime.

BIG EAST TV

Reports: ESPN matches NBC's offer to Big East

UNDATED (AP) -- Sports Business Journal and ESPN.com are reporting that ESPN has matched NBC's offer to buy the Big East's television rights for about $20 million per year over six years.

The Big East was working on a deal with NBC that would have put most of its football and men's basketball games on NBC Sports Network. The deal also gave NBC the right to sublicense games, allowing them to be aired by other networks.

ESPN had the right to match the deal by Thursday. Sports Business Journal and ESPN.com, citing unidentified sources, reported ESPN had matched but details were still being worked out.
