Green Blog: A Discovery, Marooned in Libya's Revolution

As Adam Nagourney reports in The Times, Death Valley is experiencing a burst of civic pride over reclaiming a world temperature record: a 134-degree reading registered on July 10, 1913, at Greenland Ranch in California.

The World Meteorological Organization announced in September that it was throwing out what had previously been thought to be the global record: a reading of 136.4 degrees recorded in the Libyan settlement of Al Aziziya on Sept. 13, 1922. The revised record made headlines around the world.

Yet the back story is even more interesting. Khalid el-Fadli, a Libyan member of the meteorological team that investigated the record, found the original 1922 temperature reading in a logbook at the Libyan National Meteorological Center, where he works, on Feb. 15, 2011, when a revolution had just broken out in the capital.

Working from the logbook, the international team would eventually discover that the reading was taken by an untrained observer with an instrument that was outmoded even for its time. What is more, the temperature did not jibe with other temperatures measured in the area on Sept. 13, 1922, and it differed markedly from readings taken later at Azizia.

Yet it took it took the team six months to pursue those findings, given that Mr. Fadli got sucked into a war immediately after reporting the discovery of the notebook. ?During the revolution, it was very dangerous to call anyone outside,? he said in a telephone interview from Tripoli, the Libyan capital. And ?international calls were shut down by the government? in any case, he said.

Mr. Fadli recalled: ?From March until July, I would go to my office ? not regularly, not every day. Because there was no fuel, our life was very hard.?

?

He recalls reading the e-mails flooding in from international colleagues, at first curious in tone and then deeply concerned as weeks passed by. For a full six months he resisted the urge to reply lest he be accused of corresponding with the enemy.

?

Given the level of government monitoring, any knowledge that he was communicating with an international committee ?would have been a death sentence for him,? said Chris Burt, a member of the international meteorological team.

?

Then came a television pronouncement by Col. Muammar el-Qaddafi, Libya?s longtime dictator, that NATO was using climate data relayed from Libyan scientists to plot its aerial attacks on Libyan government forces. The scientists on the meteorological team assumed the worst. ?My fear was that they had found out that el-Fadli was part of this committee,? Mr. Burt said.

?

But Mr. Fadli remained below the radar, and when the violence tapered off that August, he resumed communications with his distant colleagues, and together,?they were able to move on with their work.

and reported the discovery of the logbook.

?

He continues to work at the Libyan National Meteorological Center. ?It?s not completely normal yet,? Mr. Fadli said of his country?s situation. But a semblance of calm has returned, he added.

?

His international colleagues remain grateful. ?The records he found were really the smoking gun,? Mr. Burt said. ??He?s really ?the guy? in this investigation ? it never could have happened without him.?

?

A Detailed Look at Automotive Technology | Dokisoft ? Software ...

If you have no idea what is automotive technology, it is the field of study that focuses on repairing, maintaining, inspecting and building trucks and cars that rely on gasoline, electricity, diesel engines and alternative substances like fuel or ethanol for power.

Importance

This technology used to concentrate on mechanical repairs and procedures but now relies on high technology, using computers and computerized equipment to assess issues with electronic components, diagnose problems and test vehicles. The field is a vast one and it covers topics like temperature-control systems, fuel systems, ignition systems, four-wheel functioning, engine performance and electrical systems.

A Detailed Look at Automotive Technology

Research and Development

The competition is very stiff so research and development is always ongoing. There are many subjects covered in R&D but for businesses one of the most important is researching the tastes and preferences of consumers when it comes to trucks and cars. This is usually done by conducting surveys. Different surveys are done because cars have various target markets. These surveys are used by companies to determine what kind of vehicle to make and what features to add.

Future Automotive Technologies

There are many future technologies being developed and they focus on different aspects like materials, energy sources and design. The purpose of the research and development is to make automobiles more energy efficient. While the goal is the same, the methods for achieving these goals vary.

Fuel Efficiency and Advanced Controls

The most important goal right now for manufacturers is to make cars more fuel efficient, as rising gas prices continue unabated. With this in mind, many carmakers are now producing fuel-cell, battery, and hybrid energy saving vehicles. But development of the technology is not easy, with one of the problems being finding a power source for energy efficient cars.

However, there are many proposals such as liquid nitrogen cars, compressed-air cars, hydrogen cars and electric cars. Numerous steering control concepts have emerged, and there are plans of developing cars that can control of platoons of other vehicles.

Energy Saving Cars

Most cars today function at an efficiency rate of 15%. The rest of the energy is lost in the engine when it is idling, inefficiencies in the drive train and in the rest of the engine. It is for this reason that researchers are trying to improve this aspect of automotive technology.

One method that is used is regenerative braking as it can save energy and keep them for use in a later time. With standard brakes, all of the kinetic energy is used up and changed to thermal energy. With regenerative braking, some of the energy is kept and allows the battery to be recharged. However, this only works with hybrid cars.

Another example of this is Turbosteamer from BMW. This is in concept form but it shows promise. What is does is utilize the exhaust gas energy. According to the research, this can save energy by up to 15%. Another technology being developed is Compressed air Hybrid, an engine that forces air that is compressed in the engine which lowers the consumption of fuel by 30%.

This is just an overview of what is automotive technology, but it should be enough to help you get the concept. The field is vast, and with rapid advancements, the future of cars and other vehicles look promising and will be more energy efficient.

This Spooky Google Car Is Driving Itself

Google?s driverless car prototype has been around for a couple of years now?but have you ever spotted one in the wild? We just did, and it?s equal parts insane, terrifying, and hugely cool.

Our Brent rose saw this car, whose driver is not touching the wheel, cruising down highway 80 in Oakland. ?She was not using hands at all. Somebody next to her had a laptop so clearly it was just testing but pretty awesome. They didn?t kill us or anybody else.?

They?re out there. Don?t cut them off. They are driven by robot brains?and unlike an Apple Car, this thing does know how to follow you back home.

RolePlayGateway?

The Final Epilogue is a fanfic roleplay of the game The Last Story. It takes place generations after the game's ending, when the original members of the mercenary group have been long passed away. A new ruler has stepped up to take the throne, and everything went haywire.

The new ruler cared only for himself. Unlike other tyrants, this one happens to simply not care for his people. Instead, the ruler made decisions only to benefit himelf in petty ways (like the levee, building up his castle, having feasts and parties every meal of everyday). And there are even more threats to society now.

The citizens of Lazulis City lived peacefully with the Gurak population, until now. Now that there is a weak ruler in the Argannan throne, Segregation Groups have risen up to kill off or at least dominate the other race. What's more is that the Reptids have dug their ways out of the underground, and now are pillaging the citizens of Lazulis City, Outskirts.

However, there is hope. A new generation of the Zael Mercenaries have risen up to help the people, and relinquish the power of the ruler. They will do quests, fend of reptids, crush the Segregation Groups, and give the throne to the rumored lost child of Argannan.

Roles:

Mercenary
The Mecenaries are the protagonists of this roleplay. They try to help as much people as they can in the long run while trying to complete the ultimate goal.

The King
Julian is, to put it simple, a sick bastard who would let his people rot as long as his desires are fullfilled. Julian supports the Human Segregation Group. He is one of the antagonists of this roleplay.

Human Segregation Group
A group of human extremists who want to cause havoc on the Gurak. They want to seperate and isolate the Gurak as much as possible. Some want to kill the whole population so the humans only remain. Either way, they want to do harm to the Gurak population. Their leader is Lucian.

Leader of the Human Segregation Group
Lucian is as clever and as sneaky as a snake, and he is as deadly as one, too. His words can easily set into your head, and Lucian can easily manipulate you. His swordsmanship is unparalled to anyone still alive. However, you can still compare it to Sir Therius's skill in the sword.

Gurak Segregation Group
The Gurak clone of the Human Segregation Group. They want to overthrow King Julian as well and place their leader, Zane, on the throne.

Leader of the Gurak Segregation Group
Zane is a direct descendant of Zangurak, the former Gurak king who was killed in the war against the humans. Because of his family's history, many humans had actually despised him. Thus, he created the Gurak Segregation Group out of anger.

The Knights
While they are charged with Julian's orders, they try to resist as much as possible without him knowing. They support the mercenaries, and when the band rebels, the knights will fight alongside them. However, there are some who are part of the Segregation Groups, and a handful are fu;ly devoted to King Julian.

Other:
Magic:
Some people are able to use magic. The elements consist of light, darkness, star, nature, fire, and ice. Using the element the smae as the enemy's results in it absorbing the magic and healing itself. Using the opposite element results in more damage, however the same applies to you (you only get an element if you are a mage.).

Using magic also results in the manifestation of magic circles. They usually deal damage to the enemy except for healing circles. Fire circles add fire element to your physical attacks, ice makes ice attacks, etc etc for the other elements. You also have healing spells, which result in healing circles. Stand on them and you will get healed overtime until you are fully regenerated. After a few minutes, the circle will dissipitate on it's own.

There are three more circles. which aren't manifested by magic spells. They manifest only at the user's comman, but only ofr a short time. Damage circles keep weakening opponents, and poison circles poison the opponent. The last circle, Death circle, does not effect the opponent itself. It uses spikes that rise from the ground to attack the opponent. If they survive, they will be given the Death status, meaning that if they don't get into a heal circle, they will die. The Death Circle disappears after attacking. Damage Circles only dissipitate after the user has died.

However, there are certain skills that warriors (non magic users) can use to diffuse those circles. (Unlike the game, I will NOT allow the effects of Diffusion.)
Few mages can also have the spell Reverse, which reverses the effects (heal circles turn into damage circles, ice circles effect the original user and its allies, etc.).

Spirit Attacks:
At the time when you most need it, you would be able to do some kind of strong attack that would have an effect on the enemy. Mages use spells, warriors use slashes or stabs or whatever, and mixed usually make up something unique.
There are also two sacred spells only available to the Argannan family called Ancient Summon and Ancient Barrier. They are both unknown, and you must find out only by casting the spell as an Argannan (marriages do not apply).
Remember: Spirit attacks are extremely rare and it takes a lot of training to even learn them. Even them, I'll allow one spirit attack every ten posts.

Stocks retreat on worries about spending, 'cliff'

6 hrs.

Stocks erased their early gains to turn lower Wednesday, dragged by the consumer discretionary sector, as ongoing worries over the looming "fiscal cliff" overshadowed a better-than-expected Case-Shiller home price index.?

"There's just no certainty and people don't know where to step," said Stephen Guilfoyle of Meridian Equity Partners. "We're kind of in a quandary here?the market didn't catch at 1,422 like it was supposed to and the next catch point is 1,415 on the S&P. There's not a lot of volume and you have a lot of traders with question marks on their heads right now."?

The Dow Jones Industrial Average dipped into negative territory for the third-straight session, led by Microsoft and UnitedHealth.?

The S&P 500 and the Nasdaq also erased their gains to turn lower. The CBOE Volatility Index (VIX), widely considered the best gauge of fear in the market, gained near 19.

Most key S&P sectors turned lower, led by consumer discretionary and consumer staples, while materials held modest gains.?

Obama will return to Washington early on Thursday, according to the White House, to deal with the deadlocked talks between Democrats and Republicans on what to do with $600 billion in tax increases and automatic spending cuts, due to kick in on Jan. 1.

"I don't think the President is coming back from Hawaii without anticipating we're getting something done so I'm optimistic and the street is somewhat optimistic too," said Gordon Charlop of Rosenblatt Securities. "You don't get a sense that they're selling into the pessimism that people are trying to circulate about the fiscal cliff not being resolved." (Read More: Over the Fiscal Cliff: What Kind of Landing?)

"[But] we'll be looking at muted volume," Charlop added. "It's going to be a wait-and-see session."?

Wall Street has been increasingly worried that the two sides may not reach a deal in time. Art Cashin, director of floor operations for UBS, said such an outcome would result in a 95 percent chance of a U.S. recession next year.

The worries over the fiscal cliff and an extremely weak report on the holiday shopping season put major retail stocks including Macy's, Wal-Mart and Target under pressure.?

Sales in the two months before Christmas rose just 0.7 compared to last year, the slowest rate of growth since 2008, according to the MasterCard Advisors Spending Pulse. Analysts had been expecting growth of 3 to 4 percent.

Amazon.com and Netflix were both slightly lower after an outage at an Amazon web service center impacted Netflix subscribers in the U.S., Canada, and Latin America on Christmas eve. Service was fully restored by Christmas day.?

Meanwhile, Apple weighed on the tech sector and the Nasdaq 100 index, slipping nearly 1 percent.?

Herbalife rallied, looking to snap a nine-day losing streak, after the nutrition and skin-care products company retained a legal firm to help defend itself against attacks by hedge fund manager Bill Ackman, according to the Wall Street Journal. Last week, Ackman shorted the Herbalife's stock and accused the company of operating a pyramid scheme.?

On the economic front, the S&P/Case Shiller home price index of 20 major cities rose 0.7 percent in October on a seasonally adjusted basis, topping expectations for a gain of 0.5 percent. And prices in the 20 cities jumped 4.3 percent from last year, beating forecasts for an increase of 4.0 percent.?

Meanwhile, the Federal Reserve Bank of Richmond said manufacturers in the central Atlantic region posted modest activity in December, but at a slower pace than in November.?

Stocks in Europe were closed for the Boxing Day holiday. In Asia, markets closed higher on thin volumes, with Japanese stocks rallying to hit nine-month highs on a weaker yen.

Coming Up This Week:

  • THURSDAY: Jobless claims, new home sales, consumer confidence
  • FRIDAY: Pending home sales

U.S. may expand mortgage refinance program: WSJ

(Reuters) - The U.S. government is considering expanding its mortgage refinancing program to include borrowers whose mortgages are not backed by Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac , the Wall Street Journal reported, citing people familiar with the discussions. (http://link.reuters.com/mej84t)

The refinancing program now being considered also seeks to include "underwater" borrowers who owe more than their homes are worth, the Journal said.

The proposal would also transfer potentially riskier loans held by private investors to the government-sponsored mortgage entities Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, the paper said.

Such a move would require congressional authorization to temporarily change the charters of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, according to the Journal.

About 22 percent of all homes with a mortgage, or around 10.8 million homes, down from 12.1 million last year, were worth less than the outstanding balance at the end of June, the Journal said, citing data from CoreLogic.

Under the proposal, Fannie and Freddie would be allowed to charge higher rates to borrowers in order to compensate for the risk of guaranteeing refinanced loans that are underwater and more likely to result in default.

Officials at the U.S. Treasury could not be reached for comment by Reuters outside of regular U.S. business hours.

Combined with Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, which buy loans and repackage them as securities for investors, Washington's footprint in the market has grown to account for nearly nine of every 10 mortgages.

Summary analysis -- Chartis Singapore Insurance Pte. Ltd. --------- 26-Dec-2012

Credit Rating History:

===============================================================================

Rationale

The ratings on Chartis Singapore Insurance Pte. Ltd. reflect the company's

core status to the Chartis group (we rate the Chartis group's core operating

companies A/Stable/--). Chartis Singapore is a regional hub for the group's

Asia-Pacific (excluding Japan) operations and the company's operations in

Singapore are substantial and profitable. Chartis Singapore has strong

integration with, and support from, the group. Chartis Singapore's exposure to

increased competition and softening rates in its domestic market partly

offsets these strengths.

We view Chartis Singapore's stand-alone credit profile as strong, reflecting

the company's strong business position in the local non-life insurance market

(with a 13% share) and conservative investment portfolio.

Chartis Singapore is an indirect subsidiary of Chartis Inc., which is

ultimately owned by American International Group Inc. (AIG; A-/Negative/A-2).

Chartis Singapore benefits from access to its group's resources, expertise,

and extensive reinsurance support. As part of the Chartis group's efforts to

simplify its legal and organizational structure, Chartis has established three

geographic segments, of which one covers the Asia-Pacific region. The majority

of branch operations in Asia-Pacific have converted to locally domiciled

subsidiaries, with regional oversight by Chartis Singapore.

We view Chartis Singapore's capitalization as strong. Moreover the Chartis

group provides strong reinsurance support to the company. As part of the

group's capital management strategy, risk from volatile lines of business,

such as energy, financial lines, and commercial property, are ceded to the

Chartis group. The local entity retains the risk on less volatile business

lines, such as accident and health, and motor. Chartis Singapore's

conservative investment portfolio supports its capital position. About 94% of

invested assets are in cash, deposits, and bonds.

Continued softening in premium rates and continued pursuit of multinational

business by competitors have added to the challenges for Chartis Singapore. In

addition, the increasing cost of vehicle ownership has dampened growth

opportunities in motor insurance, where the company has a significant market

share. Chartis Singapore's operating performance has been good in the past few

years, although its underwriting performance has moderated somewhat in

2011-2012. We expect Chartis Singapore's remediation efforts on unprofitable

business and continued efforts to leverage its distribution capabilities to

improve its operating performance.

Enterprise risk management

In our view, Chartis Singapore's risk controls over factors such as insurance,

investment, and operations are adequate relative to the nature of the

company's overall risk as well as local standards.

Our view of Chartis Singapore's enterprise risk management reflects our

assessment of the risk characteristics of its ultimate parent, AIG.

Outlook

The stable outlook on Chartis Singapore is in line with the outlook on the

Chartis group.

The outlook on the Chartis group in turn reflects the stable outlook on its

ultimate parent, AIG. We view the Chartis group as strategically important to

AIG. We could lower our ratings on AIG and Chartis if the group's performance

were to fall short of our expectations, particularly with regard to earnings,

capitalization (currently strong), liquidity, or leverage. On the other hand,

we could raise the ratings if the consolidated group were to improve its

operating performance, particularly at the Chartis level, to above the

industry average while continuing to improve AIG's risk profile.

The ratings on Chartis Singapore are at the same level as that on the Chartis

group. If we upgrade Chartis group, we could upgrade Chartis Singapore if our

view of Chartis Singapore's status within the group remains unchanged.

We could raise Chartis Singapore's stand-alone credit profile if the company

improves its business position while maintaining its financial profile. We

could lower the stand-alone credit profile if the company's operating

performance deteriorates, thereby affecting its capital position.

Starting A Small Business: 7 Deadly Sins

starting a small businessA small business owner?s life can be a real roller coaster. There?s no road map, and pitfalls lurk around every corner. While making mistakes may be a great way to learn, it?s a lot better to avoid them in the first place.

Having started a few businesses in my career, and having helped thousands of small businesses launch across the country, I thought it would be useful to highlight some of the hard-won experience I?ve learned throughout the process. ?Below are 7 deadly sins for starting a small business:

1. Don?t Underestimate a Business Plan

If you?re launching a small business and aren?t planning on pitching investors, it?s tempting to skip the step of writing a formal business plan. However, taking the time to write out your business plan, forecasts, and marketing strategy can be a particularly effective way to hone your vision.

Your planning should center around a few essential questions:

  • How is my business serving a particular need or pain point?
  • Does this represent a major market opportunity?
  • How much will it cost to ramp up the business?
  • When can my projected revenues support the spending?

In addition, don?t overlook your exit strategy at the beginning. Do you want your children to take over the company? Do you want to sell it? It?s critical to think about these questions from the start, as the building blocks of your company (such as legal structure) should vary depending on your preferred final outcome.

2. Don?t Incorporate as the Wrong Business Entity

Your business? legal structure affects the amount of taxes you pay, the employee benefits you can offer, the amount of paperwork you deal with, and more. In the U.S., the three most common business structures are:

  • LLC (Limited Liability Company)
  • S Corporation
  • C Corporation

All three entities protect the personal assets of the owners from the liability of the company, yet differ when it comes to tax treatment and more.

Here are some common mistakes made by small business owners. You may want to consult a tax advisor or CPA on what structure would be best for your particular situation:

  • A small business owner creates a C Corp for her business, then discovers what ?double taxation? means when she has to file taxes for both her business and personal taxes. Her CPA advises her to elect for pass-through S Corp treatment to avoid this next year.
  • Two friends form an S Corporation for their new business. However, they?re stuck paying taxes in direct proportion to their ownership, even though they?ve actually arranged to allocate the profits 75-25 the first year since one was responsible for significantly more work. Instead of the S Corp, they should have formed an LLC where they can have more flexibility when it comes to dividing the profits and their taxes.

Of course, the biggest mistake a small business owner can make is failing to create a legal business entity at all.

3. Don?t Pick Delaware or Nevada for the State of Incorporation if you Don?t Live There?

Many business owners think they should choose among Delaware, Wyoming, or Nevada when incorporating or forming an LLC. And yes, these are popular states for incorporation in the U.S. because of low filing fees and pro-business statutes.

However, these two states aren?t necessarily the best choices for every business. For the small business (defined here as one with less than five shareholders), it?s better to incorporate in the state where there?s a physical presence, meaning where you live or have an office. Otherwise, there can be too many hassles associated with operating ?out of state.? These include:

  • Difficulties opening a business bank account
  • Having to appoint a registered agent
  • Fees for operating as a ?foreign entity? in your own state

4. Don?t Underestimate the Importance of a Business Name

A business begins with a name. It?s the cornerstone of company identity and shapes all that follows. Think about what?s important to you and your business. What?s the first thing you want a customer to think about with regard to your business?

For example, a young company breaking into the financial advising field may be more concerned about credibility and thus forgo the edgy, attention-grabbing name.

It?s smart to check that a business name is available to use before you order your business cards, as you don?t want to be on the wrong end of a trademark dispute. In most cases, you don?t need an attorney to check if your name is available; you can perform these easy steps on your own:

  • Perform a free search online that looks at business names registered with the secretary of state in the state where you?re located
  • Then take your search to the next level and conduct a free trademark search to make sure your name is available in all 50 states

5. Don?t Fall Into a Discount Trap

At the beginning, too many young companies feel the pressure to heavily discount their prices in order to win business. While customer acquisition is important, attracting customers at unsustainable price levels will just result in a race to the bottom. I?ve learned that you?re better off in the long run focusing on how to bring more value to customers, rather than simply slashing your prices.

6.?Don?t Go Against Your Intuition

Intuition is a critical part of the decision making process, and it?s just as important in business as it is in other areas of your life. Business deals depend on relationships, whether it?s with partners, employees, vendors, or clients. You need to get a read on other people you?re involved with ? and then trust your gut (even if the numbers are telling you otherwise).

7. Don?t Be Afraid to Fail

Lastly, if you?re scared of failing, you?re probably playing it too safe as a business owner. Failure is practically a rite of passage for successful entrepreneurs. Valuable lessons can be learned through the experience?lessons which you would never learn from a business class.

Soccer coach Sven-Goran Eriksson once said:

?The greatest barrier to success is the fear of failure.?

If you find yourself nervous about what might happen, think about all the opportunities and possibilities you leave behind by not ever trying. Trying (no matter what the outcome is) is your first step toward success.

PFT: Chiefs set dubious record in loss to Colts

Tim TebowAP

Jets quarterback Tim Tebow has acknowledged that he was upset when he learned last week that he had been bypassed on the depth chart by Greg McElroy. Now Tebow says his goal now is to become a good quarterback ? somewhere ? in 2013.

Tebow told ESPN?s Adam Schefter he is ?more determined than ever to dedicate my entire off-season to becoming the best quarterback I can be next season.?

Regarding the ESPNNewYork.com report that Tebow told Jets coach Rex Ryan he didn?t want to play in the Wildcat after he was informed that McElroy would start in place of the benched Mark Sanchez, Tebow admitted that he was upset, and he expressed his displeasure to Ryan. Schefter?s report does not specify, however, whether Tebow flat-out refused to play in the Wildcat when he found out on Tuesday that McElroy was starting, or whether Tebow merely said he was unhappy that he wasn?t getting the opportunity to start.

Whatever transpired between Tebow and Ryan, Tebow did tell Schefter that on Friday he told Ryan that he was willing to do whatever it took to help the team win. By that time, the Jets had been planning to use receiver Jeremy Kerley in the Wildcat role, and that?s what they did in Sunday?s game against the Chargers.

The fact that Tebow even had to express to Ryan that he was willing to do anything to help the team win is telling. If a player is conducting himself the right way, it should go without saying that he is willing to do whatever he has to do to help his team win. If the Jets? coaches needed to be reassured that Tebow was willing to do whatever he had to do to help the team win, that strongly suggests that Tebow isn?t quite the humble, hard-working player that he tries to portray himself as. The job of a football player is to play football the way his coaches tell him to play. It doesn?t matter if Tebow thinks he deserves to start ahead of McElroy. The Jets? coaches decided that McElroy was the starter for Sunday?s game, and Tebow?s job was to support the team in whatever role the coaches told him to play.

If Tebow ever expressed anything other than a firm commitment to doing whatever the coaches asked him to do, then he?s no better than Santonio Holmes, who was widely ripped last year for being a destructive force in the Jets? locker room. Holmes was pilloried all offseason for the way he acted at the end of the Jets? season in 2011. If Tebow is acting the same way at the end of the Jets? season in 2012, he deserves the same scorn.

As for Tebow?s ambitions of being a starter next year, well, good luck with that. There is exactly one NFL team that might be willing to give Tebow a shot, and that team ? Jacksonville ? would be willing to give him a shot for business reasons, not for football reasons. Tebow is desired in Jacksonville because he?s viewed as a good guy, not a good football player. And the news of the last 24 hours suggests that he?s actually not that good a guy.

(AP) ? The pieces of the puzzle that have been the Lakers' confounding season so far are starting to fall into place.

Kobe Bryant engineered a second-half comeback, the defense stepped up, and Los Angeles beat the New York Knicks 100-94 on Tuesday, extending its winning streak to five games.

"We're .500," a smiling Dwight Howard said. "We did it on Christmas, too. I knew this day would come."

Bryant scored 34 points in his NBA-record 15th Christmas Day game and Metta World Peace added 20 points and seven rebounds while defending Carmelo Anthony, whose 34 points led the Knicks. Anthony said he hyperextended his left knee, but expects to play on Wednesday in Phoenix.

Bryant, the league's leading scorer, has topped 30 or more points in nine straight games.

"If you're going to play on Christmas, it's always better to win. Makes it all worthwhile," said Bryant, who would soon hop a flight to Denver, getting there ahead of the Nuggets, who played the Clippers in the other half of the holiday doubleheader at Staples Center.

The Lakers improved to 14-14 ? 9-9 under new coach Mike D'Antoni ? and upped their holiday record to 21-18, including 13-9 at home. They returned to .500 for the first time since they were 8-8 on Nov. 30.

"It's so early in the season to have turned a corner," Bryant said. "We have everybody in the lineup and we're starting to see how we want to play."

The Knicks controlled most of the game behind Anthony and J.R. Smith, who had 24 points. But they struggled offensively in the fourth, when Anthony was limited to seven points and Smith had five as the Lakers' defense clamped down. World Peace fouled out with 1:58 to play and the Lakers ahead by four.

World Peace credited his defense on Anthony to "old-school basketball."

"I'm back in shape and it's a little tough to guard me," he said.

Steve Nash said: "This is what he's been doing all year. He gets his hands on a lot of balls, pounds on the other team's best guy. You can't win without that type of effort."

Smith's 3-pointer pulled New York to 96-94. After Pau Gasol made one of two free throws, Smith missed another 3 that would have tied the game at 97 with 32 seconds left.

"We missed a lot of easy shots, a lot of little chippers around the basket, shots that we normally make," Anthony said. "There were some plays that we thought should have went our way down the stretch, but for the most part, we fought. I'll take this effort any night. If we continue to play with this effort, we'll win a lot of games."

With Bryant double-teamed, Nash passed to Gasol, who dunked with 12 seconds to go, punctuating a win that sent Lakers fans, frustrated by the team's struggles and coaching change, home happy. The Lakers avenged a 116-107 loss in New York on Dec. 13.

A smiling Howard called Gasol's driving slam "a submarine dunk because he was very low to the ground."

Gasol responded, "I don't dunk as often as I used to so it felt good. I took it right down the lane and finished strong."

Nash had 16 points, 11 assists and six rebounds in his second game in nearly two months. He missed 24 straight games while recovering from a small fracture in his lower left leg. Howard had 14 points and 12 rebounds, and Gasol had 13 points and eight rebounds.

"It was an important win for us as we were a little bit desperate," Nash said. "We've gone through a lot since Mike Brown ? new coach, new offense. It's been a difficult transition."

Bryant had eight of the Lakers' first 10 points to open the fourth during a run that provided their first lead since the opening quarter in a game matching the two teams that have played the most on Christmas Day.

They took the lead for good on Bryant's basket with 7:38 remaining. Anthony and Tyson Chandler were in foul trouble in the fourth, with Chandler fouling out late.

"They just were a little bit more aggressive," Anthony said. "Kobe got it going and Steve Nash hit some big shots down the stretch. When you have a guy like Nash doing that, it's kind of tough. Those guys know how to play. They've been waiting for Steve Nash to get back, so it's just a matter of then sticking it out until he did."

The Knicks opened the third on a 15-5 run, with Anthony setting up on the perimeter and hitting two 3-pointers as part of his 10 points that stretched their lead to 61-53. His jumper provided the Knicks' largest lead of the game, 69-60.

Bryant and Nash ignited the quiet atmosphere by leading a 17-9 run that drew the Lakers to 78-77 going into the fourth. They combined to score 15 points, although Bryant missed two free throws to end the third that would have given the Lakers their first lead since early in the game.

The Knicks' earlier roll dissolved in missed shots and a technical on Chandler for arguing a call.

"We were more determined, fought for everything," Nash said about the second half.

World Peace scored 16 points in the second quarter, including eight in a row, when the Lakers played catch-up most of the way. His 3-pointer gave the Lakers their first lead of the period with 1:10 remaining. Smith tied it up with a free throw before Nash's jumper sent the Lakers into halftime leading 51-49.

"We're playing really well together," World Peace said. "Kobe is really playing excellent now. He's still being aggressive on the offensive end, but he's giving everybody a chance to be aggressive. Pau is making strong, aggressive moves."

Bryant scored the Lakers' final nine points of the first quarter to give them a 25-23 lead. D'Antoni's plan of having Darius Morris guard Anthony didn't last long after he scored five of the Knicks' first seven points.

"I thought he'd get warmed up before he started firing," World Peace said.

NOTES: Bryant surpassed Oscar Robertson as the league's all-time Christmas Day scorer with 383 points. Robertson had 377. ... Knicks F/C Amare Stoudemire shot some before the game. He's been out all season after left knee surgery. "I'm not quite there yet, but I'm making progress," he said. "I've just got to stay patient and stay ready. We've been doing extremely intense work, as far as cardio." ... Knicks C Marcus Camby had four points and four rebounds in 8 minutes. He's been sidelined by a sore left foot and barely played this season. ... Asked about Bryant as an MVP candidate, D'Antoni said, "You can't put anybody MVP if you're below .500." ... In their only other Christmas Day meeting in 1963, the Lakers beat the Knicks 134-126 behind 47 points by Jerry West and 27 from Elgin Baylor. ... Nash said the gift bags in their lockers with the tag, "From Kobe Merry Xmas 2012" contained headphones. "Can't ever have enough," he said. ... The Lakers were all in white, while the Knicks were all in orange down to their socks in a color similar to Syracuse. ... Among the celebs holidaying at Staples Center were Rihanna and Chris Brown, Adam Levine, Samuel L. Jackson, George Lopez and Richard Lewis. Vanessa Bryant and her two young daughters sat courtside opposite the Lakers bench.

Anne's Food: Broccoli & avocado salad

Untitled

I hope you're not sick of christmas food, because I still haven't managed to transfer the photos from my camera of some new dishes I've made recently. But I will, I promise. Meanwhile, have some salad! This is a pretty hearty thing, that we ate with steaks and some roasted potatoes. It's absolutely delicious, and would be a good stand-alone dish as well.

Broccoli & avocado salad
serves 2-4 depending on what else you serve

1/2 red onion
1 lemon
Salt
1 head of broccoli

2 tbsp sour cream
1 tbsp olive oil

1/2 red pepper, diced
10 cherry tomatoes, quartered
Handful basil, finely sliced
Handful cashews
1-2 avocados, diced
50 g feta cheese, crumbled

First, finely chop the red onion, and mix with the squeezed-out lemon in a bowl. Season with a pinch of salt, too.

Next, separate the broccoli into small florets. Peel the stalk and discard the tough outsides, but slice the rest. Cook for three minutes, then plunge into cold water to stop the cooking.

Add the sour cream and olive oil to the lemon dressing, and mix well.

And then - assemble. Just mix everything together, but make sure to don't break up the avocado too much. Use a light hand!

Steve Jobs' superyacht caught up in payment spat

AMSTERDAM (AP) ? The sleek, white superyacht Apple founder Steve Jobs commissioned before his death cannot leave the Netherlands just yet due to a payment dispute

Jobs collaborated on designing the 78.2-meter (256-foot) all-aluminum "Venus," which has a minimalist aesthetic, with French product designer Philippe Starck. Dutch newspaper Het Financieele Dagblad reported Friday that Starck hired a debt collection agency and got a summary legal order to keep the boat from leaving.

Port of Amsterdam spokesman Jeroen Ranzijn confirmed the boat has been in the harbor since Dec. 8, and won't leave until the civil dispute is resolved ? possibly later Friday.

According to the paper, Starck had only been paid ?6 million ($7.9 million) by Job's heirs, but believed he was owed ?9 million. The boat cost ?105 million.

Oprah Still Influential - Childhood Obesity News

me and Oprah

In one of the most attention-getting books on food and nutrition to have been published in the last decade, The End of Overeating, Dr. David Kessler puts forth the idea that even though the individual ingredients in food might not be overwhelmingly attractive, the ways in which they are combined or ?layered? be very dangerous.

Seemingly, when sugar, salt, and fat are mixed together with certain complex techniques, there is a witches?-brew effect, where the finished product becomes more than the sum of its parts.?The New York Times reviewer Tara Parker-Pope phrased it like this:

Foods that contain too little or too much sugar, fat or salt are either bland or overwhelming. But food scientists work hard to reach the precise point at which we derive the greatest pleasure from fat, sugar and salt? By combining fats, sugar and salt in innumerable ways, food makers have essentially tapped into the brain?s reward system, creating a feedback loop that stimulates our desire to eat.

What they want to create is an irresistible multisensory experience, and they succeed. What the consumers end up with is a bad case of ?conditioned hypereating,? the inability to stop even when the body know it has had enough. The brain wants to continue receiving those jolts of pure pleasure, and it overrules the whole intricate system of chemical checks and balances that is supposed to keep us from running amok at the buffet table.

Dr. Pretlow notes that ?conditioned hypereating? is indistinguishably similar to addiction, a word which Dr. Kessler refrained from using in his book, and says:

Once the brain realizes that hyperpalatable foods ease sadness, stress, and boredom, the brain undergoes changes to keep the ?comfort eating? behavior going, resulting in addiction.

Food addiction is an increasingly recognized but still unpopular paradigm in America. Some parents and even some health professionals don?t want to admit the terrible power that ?comfort eating? can hold over a vulnerable child or an adult in a dysfunctional life situation. But why should we be surprised that millions of people are addicted to substances that are both legal and easily available?

Another food researcher described how people self-medicate with foods to achieve an ideal combination of stimulating and sedating effects. The same dark science exists in the hard-drug world, too, in a concoction called a ?speedball? that combines cocaine for the ?up? and heroin for the ?down.?

When Oprah Winfrey started her own network, the OWN, one of the things she brought to the screen was a ?docu-series? called ?Addicted to Food.? It focused on eight central participants and followed their progress through the Shades of Hope treatment program. Many viewers reacted positively to the message that recovery is possible even for the most seemingly hopeless. The page that describes the docu-series has also collected comments from its fans, and here are some examples of their painful admissions:

I am becoming my worst enemy?
My food addiction is consuming my every waking moment?
I am miserable.
It?s always a battle, always a roller coaster.
I can do good for a while, then I go the opposite way.
I am in a self inflicted hell.
Sometimes I just wonder how I can go on another day.

?Addicted to Food? obviously resonates with a segment of the population. Oprah has personally interviewed a 24-year-old food addict named Josh, who used to weigh 547 pounds and got down to 259 via an inpatient rehabilitation program. One of the roots of his emotional pain was the big secret he had been keeping ? that he was gay. ?I hid behind the fat guy,? he said. Resolving that helped a lot. As many recovering addicts have found, an authentic life reduces the amount of emotional distress, and reduces the desire for comfort eating.

Your responses and feedback are welcome!

How to buy another home - Zillow Real Estate Advice

Short answer, YES! You have a variety of options to do so.

Not so short answer...This is an area of expertise for me. I'm an investor as well as a Realtor. Turning your condo into a rental is a great way to produce a few hundred dollars in additional monthly income. Some lenders will consider that you will have renters and adjust your back ratio (debt/income) to account for that. They will probably use their own rental data for that, not what you intend to charge for rent. You have enough equity (~19%), but you still need to be aware if an acceleration clause exists in your mortgage to include your 2nd mortgage, if you have one.

Regarding your new property, FHA loans don't require 20% down. If your credit score is good, you may only need 3.5% down plus closing costs...unless you want to put more down.

Feel free to contact me for additional info.

Russia on UN Troops for Syria: No Peace to Keep

Western calls to install a ?UN peacekeeping force? in Syria have been shot down by the Russian Foreign Ministry, which noted that there is no peace for them to keep in the middle of a civil war.

Calls for UN action have been common enough, but other than a brief period when UN monitors were deployed to monitor a ceasefire, only to be withdrawn when rebels disavowed the ceasefire, the UN has not deployed into the country.

The idea that the UN could impose an end to fighting is implausible, as Western estimates for their own occupations have suggested it would take an enormous number of troops to conquer Syria, let alone do so while fighting both regime and rebels. The UN simply doesn?t have the troops.

Russian officials say that the effort to approve some sort of UN force is simply an effort to get something through the UN that NATO can use as justification for their own invasion. This has meant most UN Security Council resolutions have been vetoed by Russia as too vague, or vetoed by NATO members for being not vague enough.

The Need Ryan Kerrigan Jersey for Adware and Spyware Blocker ...

There is this one law school student whose thesis is about funds laundering so oftentimes she would google the term to come up having a prepared list of on the internet references. This proved to become valuable to her and the complete method of writing her paper. Right after many months of undertaking so, she was confronted with issues like getting directed to a weird page totally not associated to income laundering each time she kinds the same words.

At first she thought it was just a glitch in the web system then she rationalized that no it maybe a glitch inside the search engine she is employing however the persistent occurrence of such a factor made her think that an individual bugged her. All of us hate bugging men and women us but individuals we can fend of. What this law student is confronted with is a personal computer bug that she cannot fend off. In the initial spot she is not a technologies savvy person and while in the second spot she never ever utilizes her laptop for any other points than academic Ryan Kerrigan Jersey study and actual writing of her papers.

The situation over is not an isolated case. There are many people that discover themselves caught up in technological innovation issues that happen to be thoughts boggling but truly might be answered with two words and those two words are spyware and adware. The infamous phrase of spyware was very first coined inside the year 1995 nonetheless it was popularized in the year 2000. Spyware is a personal computer computer software innocently infiltrated inside a private laptop or computer to be ready to access individual data from the consumer.

This really is done by studying logging keystrokes, internet browsing historical past and even scanning an user?s hard drive. Sounds like one thing we see only in James Bond motion pictures but apparently we?re wrong for everyone can be a victim of spyware. It is safe and sound Ryan Kerrigan Jersey to make use of the word victim simply because nobody wants to be monitored of all their on the internet actions. Spyware can understandably be employed to spy on criminals simply because this kind of use is beneficial to society but how about the utilization of spyware to intercept bank card details as well as the like. There exists just no excuse for the lax of the use of spyware.

What ordinary men and women can do to shield themselves is always to block spyware and all other software program applications related to it like adware and malware. This may simply be performed by availing adware and spyware blocker applications on the web. The role of these blocking applications incorporate to take away or disable existing spyware applications or to avoid the installation of these malicious software applications.

Spyware, adware, malware usually are not like virus or worms that self replicate but they may be just as hassle as their counterparts for whoever desires to be disrupted of their Ryan Kerrigan Jersey typical private personal computer actions. Certainly one of the a lot more well-known hassles cause by these infectious computer software applications could be the slowness from the personal computer which may genuinely be irritating because when you are at operate you have a tendency to desire to finish items rapid not only because you might be necessary but additionally simply because you wish more carried out or you wish to be ready to go house early.

In some infections, spyware just isn?t even evident since the negative guy so it may get away with its crime. It really is finest then to get a ready blocker to no less than do something for preventing any infection to occur within the very first spot.

Idaho Potato Bowl 2012: Utah State Routs Toledo 41-15 With Big Day By Kerwynn Williams (VIDEO)

BOISE, Idaho ? Utah State running back Kerwynn Williams was having a quiet day when things took a turn for the worse in the fourth quarter when he fumbled deep in his own territory.

As it has all season, the Aggies' defense did its job, holding Toledo to a field goal that cut the lead to 13-9 with 7:28 to go. Then Williams atoned for his mistake ? in a big way.

On the next possession, Williams broke through the defense and raced 63 yards for a touchdown. On the next two possessions, the senior was unstoppable, ripping off a 56-yard run and scoring TDs on runs of 5 and 25 yards, all within a span of less than 4 minutes to lift No. 18 Utah State to a 41-15 victory over Toledo in the Famous Idaho Potato Bowl on Saturday.

"When stuff like that happens you have to have a short memory," Williams said about the fumble. "You can't change it. I just knew the next opportunity for me, I needed to make a big play."

Williams' fourth-quarter spree fueled a 28-point Aggies scoring burst that turned a close game into a blowout. Williams finished with a career-best 235 yards rushing on 18 carries, with 182 of those yards coming on six carries in the fourth quarter, and was voted MVP.

Williams' heroics also capped the most successful season in the history of Utah State football. The Aggies finished 11-2, won the Western Athletic Conference title outright and won a bowl game for the first time since 1993. Utah State also will likely finish ranked for the first time since 1961.

"You play in bowls to win championships, and they did that today," said Aggies coach Gary Andersen, who in four years has turned a Western Athletic Conference doormat into the top team of a conference soon to be obsolete. "They (team) reached every single goal they set last January. That doesn't happen often in life or often in football. I'm very, very proud of them."

The Aggies, bolstered all year by one of the best defenses in FBS, rolled up 582 yards total yards on offense.

Quarterback Chuckie Keeton was 21-of-31 passing for 229 yards and 92 yards rushing, including a 62-yard dash that put Utah State up 7-3 in the first quarter.

The defense also turned in another impressive performance. Toledo (9-4) was able to move the ball at times and made five trips inside the red zone. But penalties, miscues and an inability to execute on critical plays forced the Rockets to settle for three Jeremiah Detmer field goals. Detmer hit a pair from 37 yards out and another from 29, closing his season by making 17 straight.

Toledo's only touchdown came when Bernard Reedy returned a fourth-quarter kickoff 87 yards for a touchdown. Reedy was the only big producer on a Toledo offense held to 315 total yards. Reedy had 51 yards rushing and caught six passes for 62 yards.

"When they got down in the red zone, they scored touchdowns. When we got down into the red zone we kicked field goals," first-year Toledo coach Matt Campbell said. "In big football games you have to win details."

Toledo quarterback Austin Dantin, who started in place of the injured Terrence Owens, was 12 of 21 passing for 132 yards. Dantin threw an interception in the third quarter to end a promising scoring drive and was replaced by Owens in the fourth quarter.

Owens moved the Rockets on his first possession, but another red-zone opportunity was squelched when the Aggies snuffed Owens for no gain on a fourth-and-1 play from the 9.

Toledo also was forced to adjust early without two of its best players. Linebacker Dan Molls, the nation's leading tackler, had a concussion on the opening kickoff and didn't return. Minutes later, running back David Fluellen, the nation's eighth-leading rusher, went down with an ankle injury. He finished with 38 yards on seven carries.

Campbell refused to use the injuries to Moll and Fluellen as an excuse and pointed out the game was close until the final 7 1/2 minutes.

"Injuries happen, they occur, you have to have the ability to adapt and you have to have the ability to move on," he said. "We were still in the game in the fourth quarter. I'm really proud of our football team from that standpoint."

Solidoodle 3 is an $800 3D printer that you can stand on, we go hands and feet on

Companies will go to fascinating lengths to demonstrate their belief in a product, but there was still something refreshing in watching Solidoodle founder Sam Cervantes climbed atop his company's latest creation, beaming. After all, the announcement of a $500 printer back in April left us wondering what sorts of corners the company would have to cut to offer a product at a fraction the cost of what Cervantes' former employer, MakerBot, has brought to the market. Asked whether Solidoodle had to make any compromises to hit such an impressive price point, the one-time aerospace engineer stood by his product's build quality. And then he stood on it.

Announced in November and due out next month, the company's latest product doesn't quite hit that price point. Solidoodle had to drive cost up a fair amount to double the last generation's build platform to 512 cubic inches. Still, $799 seems like chump change for entrance into the nascent world of home 3D printing, particularly for a device that is built as solidly as Cervantes claims. The team popped by our New York offices to drop off and stand on the Solidoodle 3. Cervantes was quick to point out that the printer is still firmly in prototype mode (in fact, it's the first prototype to leave the confines of the company's headquarters), with his team doing its damnedest to get the product in the hands of customers by early next month. A quick glance at the rear of the printer confirms this -- there's a fair amount of exposed wiring back there and the spool of plastic hangs on an exposed PVC pipe.

New genetic disorder of balance and cognition discovered

ScienceDaily (Dec. 6, 2012) ? The family of disorders known as ataxia can impair speech, balance and coordination, and have varying levels of severity. Scientists from the Universities of Oxford and Edinburgh have identified a new member of this group of conditions which is connected to 'Lincoln ataxia', so called because it was first found in the relatives of US President Abraham Lincoln. The results are published in the journal PLOS Genetics.

Lincoln ataxia affects the cerebellum, a crucial part of the brain controlling movement and balance. It is caused by an alteration in the gene for 'beta-III spectrin', a protein found in the cerebellum. Each person has two copies of a gene, and in Lincoln ataxia there is an alteration in only one of the two copies. Unexpectedly, the British scientists have found cases of alterations in both copies of the gene, causing a novel disorder called 'SPARCA1' which is associated with a severe childhood ataxia and cognitive impairment.

This is the first report of any spectrin-related disorder where both copies of the gene are faulty and has given important insights into both Lincoln ataxia and SPARCA1.

The work was done using whole genome sequencing, a relatively new technology which allows all of a person's genetics information to be analysed. In addition to sequencing work, the scientists characterized the condition using mice lacking beta-III spectrin. This analysis, combined with previous work, links the protein defect to changes in nerve-cell shape in the brain areas associated with cognition and coordinated movements. The work shows that loss of normal beta-III spectrin function underlies both SPARCA 1 and Lincoln ataxia, but a greater loss of beta-III spectrin is required before cognition problems arise.

The combination of methods used in this study highlight a broad role for spectrin in normal brain function beyond the cerebellum. There are many brain spectrins and the team are now searching for other abnormalities of spectrin function, as they believe these are part of an expanding group of conditions known as "neuronal spectrinopathies."
