Millions of women use contraception in the form of birth control pills. This allows them to have control over their pregnancy and body. Earlier, women had to depend only on condom, which would prevent a pregnancy but now it is not always so. Birth control pills can be used even after intercourse. As per the advice of doctors, you can use emergency contraceptive pills within a time frame of 72 hours after having unprotected sexual intercourse and this will prevent you from getting pregnant. Using it after 3 days will not have any effect on ovulation and hence you might not be protected against an unwanted pregnancy. Some people think that a morning after pill can only be used the morning after you have unprotected sexual intercourse but it is not always so.

You can use these pills for up to 5 days after sexual intercourse. While the effectiveness of morning after pills is high during clinical trials, they do not give 100% warranty. There are more than 4-5% chances that a woman will get pregnant even after taking the pill. Most pills are really effective when taken within 12 hours of unprotected sexual intercourse. You should keep in mind that these pills are very different from abortion pills. Birth control pills are just a type of preventative measure against pregnancy.

Levonelle is an emergency contraception that works up to 72 hours after unprotected sexual intercourse. It works by preventing ovulation and fertilisation. How this medication works is not fully understood but it is known to be quite effective. Levonelle tricks the body into believing that ovulation has already occurred as it gives the body synthetic progesterone, which is responsible for preventing the release of eggs from the ovaries. Although there are very less side effects of this pill, it is always better to consult a doctor before using it.

It's Not the Economy: Here's Why Your Investments Are Failing ...

When the financial markets experience volatility and the economy tightens, as it is today, many people point to these circumstances as the reasons their investment plans are failing. But the reality is that volatility is a natural occurrence. History has shown that financial markets and the economy move in cycles.

So, if these market cycles are to be expected, why do many investors still struggle? Following are some of the most common reasons and suggestions on how to avoid these pitfalls.

?No clear goals for the portfolio. As with many aspects in life, having a clear goal creates a clear direction and improves the odds of success. What are the goals of the investment portfolio?? ?To make money? is rarely a true (or effective) goal of any portfolio. Goals should delve deeper and be more specific. Examples might be to retire maintaining the lifestyle one has become accustomed to (or to improve it), to pay for a child?s education, or to support parents during their golden years, to name a few.

Concentrating on return; ignoring risk. Too often, investors concentrate on possible returns without realizing what risk is needed to obtain that return. There are many opportunities for large payoffs that require you to risk losing everything. Most investment opportunities are not that dramatic, but investors should understand what risk they are taking (and are comfortable taking) prior to making any investment.

No rebalance/sell discipline. Many investors take the time to research particular investments before making the decision to buy. But few conduct the same due diligence to learn what circumstances would necessitate increasing or decreasing the size of that investment within their overall portfolio. Knowing when to adjust ? or rebalance ? one?s portfolio by selling particular investments is a crucial component of any successful investment strategy.

Lack of diversification.? A portfolio invested primarily in one market sector runs the risk of that sector failing, but also stands to gain from any upside of that sector. For most investors, the potential downside risk carries more weight than the potential upside return. A diversified portfolio should include investments across many market segments and sectors to help balance risk and reward. A few areas of diversification that may be overlooked are foreign exposure and small capitalization exposure (both domestic and foreign).

Buying ?products? rather than solutions. Investors are constantly offered investment products. Although products are necessary, they should be the final piece of the equation, not the first. Rather than start with a product, look at the end goal. Review the various solutions available to you and decide which product(s) is the best tool for the desired solution.

Taking too much (or too little) risk. Some investors take too much risk, in hope of a windfall. Others are more worried about losing what they have than they are interested in getting more. Understanding how much risk an investor can or should take is an important key to the overall success of the investment plan.

Risk is a difficult concept to measure, of course. It can be measured by academic formulas, which have both benefits and drawbacks. Risk can also be measured by ?comfort? of the investor with the portfolio. A combination of both measurements may be the best solution. Once goals have been set, risk can be measured as a probability of meeting the desired goals.? If the goals can be met with a ?less risky? portfolio, that may be a viable solution. On the other hand, there may be times when an investor needs to take more risk to increase the probability of meeting the desired goals. In such cases, if an investor is not comfortable with that level of risk, it may be necessary to modify the goals.

Thinking short term. Risk is directly related to the investor?s time horizon. Market returns are not linear; they ebb and flow with short-term economic cycles. Historically, investing in the financial markets has provided superior results when investments are made and maintained for the long term.

Making emotional decisions. Typically, investors are fearful of putting their money into bear markets when there is often good value to be gained over the long term. Conversely, investors often become greedy and invest too heavily during rising markets when the true growth potential is slowing and coming to a close. An example of this is the tech bubble of the late 1990s that not only pulled a lot of investors in too late in hopes of getting extraordinary returns, but also made them nervous and kept them out of the stock market after the detrimental burst when other equities were taking off. Simply put, emotions can get the best of investors and keep them from achieving the full potential of the stock market in the long-term.

There is no plan. Perhaps the most common reason why investment plans fail is that the investor doesn?t actually have a plan. All of the points previously outlined in this article will factor into developing an investment plan. Once you?ve developed a plan, put it in writing.? Review the document and portfolio on a regular basis (quarterly or annually, not daily) and make changes as needed. The old adage ?people do not plan to fail, they fail to plan? is never more true than in creating and maintaining a portfolio.

Going it alone. Keeping track of all these key issues is a big job, and most investors don?t have the time or education to do it alone. Working with a trusted advisor to create and maintain an investment plan will help ensure success in the long term. Competent investment advisors work with clients to determine their personal and financial goals, needs and priorities; understand their time frame for achieving results; and discuss their tolerance for financial risk. Having a comprehensive knowledge of diverse financial issues ? such as taxes, investments, retirement planning, estate planning and insurance ? enable advisors to help clients understand long-term planning and the big picture. Above all, an advisor must take seriously his fiduciary responsibility to always place the client?s best interest as his highest priority.

Honey could be effective at treating and preventing wound infections

ScienceDaily (Jan. 31, 2012) ? Manuka honey could help clear chronic wound infections and even prevent them from developing in the first place, according to a new study published in Microbiology. The findings provide further evidence for the clinical use of manuka honey to treat bacterial infections in the face of growing antibiotic resistance.

Streptococcus pyogenes is a normal skin bacterium that is frequently associated with chronic (non-healing) wounds. Bacteria that infect wounds can clump together forming 'biofilms', which form a barrier to drugs and promotes chronic infection. Researchers at Cardiff Metropolitan University have shown that manuka honey can not only destroy fully-formed S. pyogenes biofilms in vitro but also prevent the bacteria initially binding to components of wound tissue.

Honey has long been acknowledged for its antimicrobial properties. Traditional remedies containing honey were used in the topical treatment of wounds by diverse ancient civilisations. Manuka honey is derived from nectar collected by honey bees foraging on the manuka tree found growing in New Zealand and parts of Australia. It is included in modern licensed wound-care products around the world. Manuka honey has been reported to inhibit more than 80 species of bacteria, yet the antimicrobial properties of honey have not yet been fully exploited by modern medicine as its mechanisms of action are not fully understood.

Wounds that are infected with S. pyogenes often fail to respond to treatment. This is largely due to the development of biofilms which may be difficult for antibiotics to penetrate -- in addition to problems of antibiotic resistance. The results of the study showed that very small concentrations of honey prevented the start of biofilm development and that treating established biofilms grown in Petri dishes with honey for 2 hours killed up to 85% of bacteria within them.

The Cardiff team are working towards providing molecular explanations for the antibacterial action of honey. The latest study reveals that honey can disrupt the interaction between S. pyogenes and the human protein fibronectin, which is displayed on the surface of damaged cells. "Molecules on the surface of the bacteria latch onto human fibronectin, anchoring the bacteria to the cell. This allows infection to proceed and biofilms to develop," explained Dr Sarah Maddocks who led the study. "We found that honey reduced the expression of these bacterial surface proteins, inhibiting binding to human fibronectin, therefore making biofilm formation less likely. This is a feasible mechanism by which manuka honey minimizes the initiation of acute wound infections and also the establishment of chronic infections.

Ongoing work in Dr Maddocks' lab is investigating other wound-associated bacteria including Pseudomonas aeruginosa and meticillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA). Manuka honey has also been shown to be effective at killing these bacteria. "There is an urgent need to find innovative and effective ways of controlling wound infections that are unlikely to contribute to increased antimicrobial resistance. No instances of honey-resistant bacteria have been reported to date, or seem likely," said Dr Maddocks. "Applying antibacterial agents directly to the skin to clear bacteria from wounds is cheaper than systemic antibiotics and may well complement antibiotic therapy in the future. This is significant as chronic wounds account for up to 4% of health care expenses in the developed world."

Holding information within one's memory for a short while is a seemingly simple and everyday task. We use our short-term memory when remembering a new telephone number if there is nothing to write at hand, or to find the beautiful dress inside the store that we were just admiring in the shopping window. Yet, despite the apparent simplicity of these actions, short-term memory is a complex cognitive act that entails the participation of multiple brain regions. However, whether and how different brain regions cooperate during memory has remained elusive. A group of researchers from the Max Planck Institute for Biological Cybernetics in Tbingen, Germany have now come closer to answering this question. They discovered that oscillations between different brain regions are crucial in visually remembering things over a short period of time.

It has long been known that brain regions in the frontal part of the brain are involved in short-term memory, while processing of visual information occurs primarily at the back of the brain. However, to successfully remember visual information over a short period of time, these distant regions need to coordinate and integrate information.

To better understand how this occurs, scientists from the Max Planck Institute of Biological Cybernetics in the department of Nikos Logothetis recorded electrical activity both in a visual area and in the frontal part of the brain in monkeys. The scientists showed the animals identical or different images within short intervals while recording their brain activity. The animals then had to indicate whether the second image was the same as the first one.

The scientists observed that, in each of the two brain regions, brain activity showed strong oscillations in a certain set of frequencies called the theta-band. Importantly, these oscillations did not occur independently of each other, but synchronized their activity temporarily: "It is as if you have two revolving doors in each of the two areas. During working memory, they get in sync, thereby allowing information to pass through them much more efficiently than if they were out of sync," explains Stefanie Liebe, the first author of the study, conducted in the team of Gregor Rainer in cooperation with Gregor Hrzer from the Technical University Graz. The more synchronized the activity was, the better could the animals remember the initial image. Thus, the authors were able to establish a direct relationship between what they observed in the brain and the performance of the animal.

The study highlights how synchronized brain oscillations are important for the communication and interaction of different brain regions. Almost all multi-faceted cognitive acts, such as visual recognition, arise from a complex interplay of specialized and distributed neural networks. How relationships between such distributed sites are established and how they contribute to represent and communicate information about external and internal events in order to attain a coherent percept or memory is still poorly understood.

Gaming firms 888, Caesars extend licensing deal to U.S. (Reuters)

(Reuters) ? 888 Holdings Plc said a unit of private equity-owned Caesars Entertainment Corp extended its UK software licensing agreement with the British online gaming company to the United States.

888 said the agreement would see its arm, Dragonfish, power a selection of private poker brands of Caesars, one of the largest casino operators in the United States and owner of the famed Caesars Palace, once online gaming is permitted under the new regulatory regime.

"Utilising 888's state of the art poker platform, the agreement will allow the launch of a real money offering immediately as either Federal or state based regulation is finalized and upon licensing by gaming authorities," 888 said in a statement on Tuesday.

As U.S. states scramble for tax revenue, the potential for legalizing online poker has led casino and gaming companies MGM Resorts International and Boyd Gaming to unveil a plan to partner with online poker company Bwin.party Digital Entertainment.

Last month, 888 had said it expected core profit for 2011 to be significantly above market expectations, aided by strength in its casino and poker businesses.

888 shares, which have risen 41 percent in the last three months, closed at 47 pence on Monday on the London Stock Exchange, valuing the company at about 165 million pounds.
