Achebe's language sells his stories to Stage? Adaji, Artistic Director

In this short conversation, Artistic Director of the National Troupe of Nigeria, Martin Adaji takes a look at the dramatic and theatrical potentials of Achebe?s works and concludes that the master story teller?s deft and? creative use of language accounts for the successful adaptations of his two of? seminal works: Things Fall Apart and Arrow of God. He spoke to McPhilips Nwachukwu.

Can you talk about Achebe and the dramatic and theatrical resources for which his imaginative writing provided for the stage, theatre and the movie?
As a young boy growing up? in the village, my first encounter with literature began with the works of Chinua Achebe, especially Things Fall Apart. My Dad , who passed on? in January this year, was an ardent? lover of Achebe?s books and talked about Things Fall Apart so passionately that even at that young age in primary school I had to read the book.

And unknown to me, reading the book then? looked to me as though he was speaking my language. Achebe had this craft of? manipulating the word. If he was speaking English? using the English language you would think he was speaking Igbo to you. You would begin to think about what he said in your own language. He spoke English with the fluidity of the Igbo language.

Take for instance when he makes a statement like : ? proverb is oil with which words are eaten.? It? doesn?t register in the English sense because? words are not eaten in the English sense. But if you translate that expression from the colloquial sense in which it made, it brings out the aesthetic nuances of the personality of Achebe.

It is therefore that kind of craftiness, and that pitch of translation that makes Achebe and his books profound and has equally made it possible for him to be translated to over fifty languages.

Things Fall Apart is one? of the most translated works in recent memory. And because? of? the relevance of early missionary activities with the African continent, not just? in Igbo land, the narrative therefore becomes a symbol of what everybody experienced.

And if you are living a? lived experience with those similar? to other people?s experiences, it captures all the experiences that you have gone through yourself? in your own environment and community.

So, when you look at the works of Achebe, specifically, with reference to Things Fall Apart, the effect of colonialism in West Africa, the translator of Ichoku, a television character drawn from that narrative? become all translations that come out from the book.
Achebe was profound as an artist and the fact that he cuts across made him become more popular that many of his peers.

He spoke a language that many people understood. He was not speaking to select? audience. Unlike his counter part, Wole Soyinka, who wrote in the form of verse, poetry? and grandly rooted in the traditional backing. Soyinka spoke the language of ifa and all the Yoruba gods. And you can?t even blame him for that because the language of the gods is not plain languages.

How do all of these nuances help in the theatrical and dramatic interpretation of Achebe?s works ?
When you look at theatre, language is a very important segment of theatre practice. After all, the aim of theatre is not only to entertain , but more importantly? to communicate. If the language of a play is wildly known, it endears it more to the viewers. If one decides for instance to go into pidgin performance, one will have more followers than?? when one decides to go for Queens English performance. Achebe?s language was down to earth and was easy for the common man to understand. He also spoke in proverb for the elders to understand. And fundamentally, he communicated about events that outlived human memory.

If by your account , this experiences are peculiar to the home reader,? do you think that his narrative will draw the same sense of? dramatic appeal from the foreign reader ?
Oh, definitely. Because you can actually think about the aesthetic of Achebe in your own tongue and actualise it. Look at what late Bassey Effiong did when he translated Things Fall Apart. It was so profound that you would think you were reading the novel while watching the adaptation. That novel can be anything. A good film script writer will? break down? the story and do a film script out of that novel.

Which other of Achebe?s works do you think should be turned to into a movie?
Arrow of God is there.
?
Yes, Prof. Emeka Nwabueze of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka did something about that with his production of stage adaptation titled, When the Arrow Rebounds? during Achebe?s 60th birthday?
Ok, I don?t know about Emeka?s own. But attention can also go to A Man of the People, Ant Hill of the Savannah, No Longer At Ease or even Chike and The River.

Given Achebe?s immense contribution to the development of literature and theatre, don?t you think, the Troupe as an agency of government can use the opportunity of his death? to stage Things Fall Apart as a kind of fare well? play in his memory?
One thing is clear. Achebe is not just a national hero. He is in fact, a pan Africanist. He may not have been fulfilled in one respect because he did not get the kind of dream he wanted? Nigeria to be.

Every artist has his own goal and definitely,? and if he did not succeed? in that? yesterday, I was reading about his village, Ogidi, and I read about? how bad one of his Uncle?s felt because he could not get the kind of leadership he wanted in his community.
That? kind of feeling is? frustration in the life of an artist. But I can tell you that as far as the National Troupe is concerned, we are going to give a thought to that kind of thing. If we can not do it now definitely in future during his anniversary. We have a lot to celebrate about that man Achebe.

Pat Riley to Danny Ainge: Shut up

NEW ORLEANS (AP) ? Miami Heat President Pat Riley has added another chapter to his rivalry with the Boston Celtics.

After LeBron James complained about calls and Boston Celtics president of basketball operations Danny Ainge chided him for it, Riley lashed back Friday night.

Riley's response: "Danny Ainge needs to shut the (expletive) up and manage his own team."

This saga started Wednesday after Miami's 27-game winning streak ended in Chicago. James told reporters that night that he does not believe some of the hard fouls he takes are "basketball plays." A day later, Ainge told Boston radio station WEEI that "it's almost embarrassing that LeBron would complain about officiating."

Riley was clearly irked, calling Ainge "the biggest whiner going when he was a player."

The Heat and Celtics play April 12 in Miami.

Miami beat New Orleans 108-89 on Friday night, with James leading the way with 36 points. When informed afterward of the statement, James said he appreciated Riley having his back.

"That's who we are," James said. "We ride together, all of us, from the top to the bottom. We all protect each other on and off the floor and it was big-time to see that."

Incomes rose in February, helping to boost spending

U.S. consumer spending rose in February and income rebounded, further signs economic activity accelerated in the first quarter, even though part of the increase in consumption reflected higher gasoline prices.

The Commerce Department said on Friday consumer spending increased 0.7 percent last month after an upwardly revised 0.4 percent rise in January. Spending had previously been estimated to have increased 0.2 percent in January.

Economists polled by Reuters had expected spending, which accounts for about 70 percent of U.S. economic activity, to increase 0.6 percent last month.

After adjusting for inflation, spending was up 0.3 percent after advancing by the same margin in January.

While Americans paid 35 cents more for gasoline last month, they also bought long-lasting goods such as automobiles and spent more on services, thanks to a bounce-back in income growth.

Income increased a healthy 1.1 percent after tumbling 3.7 percent in January. A sustained pace of steady job gains is starting to boost wages, which should help to provide some cushion for households from higher taxes and support economic growth.

Personal income in December was sharply higher because of a rush to pay dividends and bonuses before tax hikes took effect this year. That also skewed data for January.

A 2 percent payroll tax cut expired on January 1 and tax rates for wealthy Americans also went up. Data ranging from employment to factory activity has so far shown little sign the tighter fiscal policy has been a major drag on the economy.

First-quarter GDP growth estimates currently range as high as a 3.2 percent annual rate. The economy grew at only a 0.4 percent pace in the fourth quarter.

Last month, the income at the disposal of households after inflation and taxes increased 0.7 percent in February after dropping 4.0 percent in January.

With income growth outpacing spending, the saving rate - the percentage of disposable income households are socking away - rose to 2.6 percent from 2.2 percent in January.

Swarming robots could be the servants of the future

Mar. 28, 2013 ? Swarms of robots acting together to carry out jobs could provide new opportunities for humans to harness the power of machines.

Researchers in the Sheffield Centre for Robotics, jointly established by the University of Sheffield and Sheffield Hallam University, have been working to program a group of 40 robots, and say the ability to control robot swarms could prove hugely beneficial in a range of contexts, from military to medical.

The researchers have demonstrated that the swarm can carry out simple fetching and carrying tasks, by grouping around an object and working together to push it across a surface.

The robots can also group themselves together into a single cluster after being scattered across a room, and organize themselves by order of priority.

Dr Roderich Gross, head of the Natural Robotics Lab, in the Department of Automatic Control and Systems Engineering at the University of Sheffield, says swarming robots could have important roles to play in the future of micromedicine, as 'nanobots' are developed for non-invasive treatment of humans. On a larger scale, they could play a part in military, or search and rescue operations, acting together in areas where it would be too dangerous or impractical for humans to go. In industry too, robot swarms could be put to use, improving manufacturing processes and workplace safety.

The programming that the University of Sheffield team has developed to control the robots is deceptively simple. For example, if the robots are being asked to group together, each robot only needs to be able to work out if there is another robot in front of it. If there is, it turns on the spot; if there isn't, it moves in a wider circle until it finds one.

Dr Gross said: "We are developing Artificial Intelligence to control robots in a variety of ways. The key is to work out what is the minimum amount of information needed by the robot to accomplish its task. That's important because it means the robot may not need any memory, and possibly not even a processing unit, so this technology could work for nanoscale robots, for example in medical applications."

This research is funded by a Marie Curie European Reintegration Grant within the 7th European Community Framework Programme. Additional support has been provided by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council.

Apple patent reveals future iPhone with wraparound display

Who wants their smartphone screen on just one side when they can have it on both? A new Apple patent applicationpublished today by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office details a device that ditches a flat design and instead goes for a flexible, wraparound AMOLED display. This could have huge implications for future iPhones.

Instead of sharp edges, the curved, wraparound design would allow for a wider selection of items on display, so users could hypothetically view 10 apps on their screen instead of, say, 5, and view photos, videos and text on their screen from all 360 degrees around. Plus, going for a wraparound display would abandon physical buttons, so users would be fully reliant on touch gestures to use their device.

MORE: Top 6 iPhone 5S Rumors

The patent also points out a way to include two flexible displays, one laying on top of the other. Although content on both displays would be the same, it would look a bit different and look almost 3D. ?An illusion of depth perception can be presented mimicking a 3D experience,? the patent reads. This could also be used with a heads-up display, basically building a second screen into one device. The patent also mentions built-in facial recognition.

Apple has applied for patents regarding flexibility before, such as the ?Electronic Devices With Flexible Displays? patent last year. Other device makers have this same concept on their minds, too, such as Samsung. Rumor has it that the Galaxy Note 3 will have the world?s first ?unbreakable? flexible display, but that?s just for the front of a device.

If Apple actually executes something like this, it will definitely change the way we use smartphones, though we suspect case makers wouldn?t be too happy.

Controversial worm keeps its position as progenitor of humankind

Mar. 27, 2013 ? Researchers are arguing about whether or not the Xenoturbella bocki worm is the progenitor of humankind. But new studies indicate that this is actually the case.

Swedish researchers from the University of Gothenburg and the Gothenburg Natural History Museum are involved in the international study. The results have been published in Nature Communications.

The Xenoturbella bocki worm is a one-centimetre long worm with a simple body plan that is only found regularly by the west coast of Sweden. The worm lacks a brain, sexual organs and other vital organs.

Zoologists have long disagreed about whether or not the Xenoturbella bocki worm holds a key position in the animal tree of life. If it does have a key position, it is very important for the understanding of the evolutionary development of organs and cell functions, such as stem cells, for example. The question is therefore not only important in the field of biology, but also for potential biomedical applications.

"It's absolutely fantastic that one of the key evolutionary organisms in the animal kingdom lives right on the doorstep of the University of Gothenburg's Centre for Marine Research. And this is actually the only place in the whole world where you can do research on the creature," says Matthias Obst from the Department of Biological and Environmental Sciences at the University of Gothenburg.

Genetic studies indicate that the Xenoturbella bocki worm belongs to the group of deuterostomes, the exclusive group to which human's belongs.

"So maybe we're more closely related to the Xenoturbella bocki worm, which doesn't have a brain, than we are to lobsters and flies, for example," says Matthias Obst.

Even though the worm does not particularly resemble man, development biologists have referred to the fact that the early embryonic development of the worm may display similarities with the group to which man belongs. But the problem has been that no one has previously been able to see the development of the creature.

But now a group of researchers at the Sven Lov?n Centre for Marine Sciences and the Gothenburg Natural History Museum have succeeded in doing what no one else has done before: to isolate newly born little Xenoturbella bocki worms.

"And these new-born worms revealed absolutely no remnants at all of advanced features! Instead, they exhibit similarities with quite simple, ancient animals such as corals and sponges," says Matthias Obst.

The studies also reveal the value of the University of Gothenburg's marine stations for important basic research.

"The Lov?n Centre at the University of Gothenburg is the only place in the whole world where you can study this paradoxical animal (in Swedish called 'Paradox worm'). That's one reason why researchers come from all over the world to Gullmarsfjorden to solve one of the great mysteries in the evolution of animal life," says Matthias Obst.

Berkshire amends warrant deal with Goldman Sachs

(AP) ? Warren Buffett's company says it's changed its warrant agreement with Goldman Sachs Group Inc. to allow it to be settled with stock, cementing its place as a long-term investor.

Berkshire Hathaway Inc. received the right to buy 43.5 million Goldman shares as part of a $5 billion deal it made to bolster the New York-based investment bank during the financial crisis.

Originally, Berkshire could buy Goldman stock for $115 per share until this Oct. 1.

Now instead of Berkshire paying cash for all 43.5 million shares, Goldman will compensate Berkshire with stock for the difference between its stock price this fall and the exercise price.

The deal will likely make Berkshire one of Goldman's top 10 biggest shareholders. Goldman shares are currently 27 percent higher than the exercise price.

Fox <b>Sports</b> answers demands for an explanation about Larry Murphy's firing with a statement which really only leads to asking why all over again. McFADDEN Joe Weider, a scrawny kid who sculpted himself with bodybuilding during the Great Depression and created an empire of muscle magazines, fitness equipment, doubtful dietary supplements and Olympic-style contests featuring Arnold Schwarzenegger, died on Saturday at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles. He was 93. The cause was heart failure, said Charlotte Parker, his longtime publicist. Mr. Weider may not have been the 97-pound weakling of the comic books who got tired of having sand kicked in his face. But as a teenager in Montreal, he hated being roughed up by neighborhood hooligans, discovered bodybuilding in a magazine and bought into it for life. He developed a V-shaped torso with bulging biceps and abs like Michelangelo?s David, and was still muscular and jut-jawed in his 70s and 80s. In the intervening decades, Mr. Weider (pronounced WEE-dur), who moved to the United States as a young man, founded many of the world?s most popular bodybuilding magazines, including Muscle and Fitness, Flex, Men?s Fitness and, for women, Shape. They had 25 million readers and were crammed with photos of greased bodybuilders and Hollywood stars like Sylvester Stallone, Cher and Mr. Schwarzenegger. Kids are looking forward to getting outside and running around. Spring sign-ups are starting all over the city including our two middle schools. Although middle school <b>Sports</b> options are few, Project 106 and The East Providence Middle School Athletics Booster Club are thrilled to be able to offer baseball and softball at both middle schools. Several coaches approached the organizations offering to volunteer their time to make these two spring <b>Sports</b> come to life for our kids. They came ready with a plan of action to hit the ground running and the two fundraising groups came together and were ready with their checkbooks. Unfortunately, all <b>Sports</b> we are used to seeing at the middle schools are not going to be available right away. There is a shortfall in resources and volunteers. Bloomberg, mayor group behind $12 million gun control campaign

President Obama weighed in once again in the fight over guns. In his weekly address, the president said each of his proposals to reduce gun violence should get a vote in Congress, including a ban on assault weapons. NBC's Lester Holt reports.

By Becky Bratu, Staff Writer, NBC News

A $12 million television ad campaign paid for by Mayors Against Illegal Guns hopes to push gun control efforts including comprehensive background checks.

New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg, the group's co-chair, announced the ad buy Saturday. The New York Times reported Bloomberg is financing the campaign.

?I don?t think there?s ever been an issue where the public has spoken so clearly, where Congress hasn?t eventually understood and done the right thing," Bloomberg told NBC News' David Gregory in an interview that will be broadcast Sunday on ?Meet the Press.?

The ads will target both Democratic and Republican senators in key states.

One of the ads portrays a middle-aged man sitting on the back of a pick-up truck and holding a rifle.

"I've owned a gun all my life and I'll fight for my right to keep it," the man says. "Background checks have nothing to do with taking guns away from anyone," he adds.

The ad urges viewers to tell Congress to vote in support of comprehensive background checks. There is no mention in the ad of an assault weapons ban, but Bloomberg told Gregory he still hopes Congress could pass one.

?We?ve been fighting since 2007 to get a vote. We are going to have a vote on ? for sure ? on assault weapons and we?re going to have a vote on background checks," he said.

"And if we were to get background checks only it wouldn?t be as good as if we got both, but we demanded a plan and then we demanded a vote. We?ve got the plan, we?re going to get the vote.?

Marines release names of 3 killed in Quantico shooting

By Becky Bratu and Matthew DeLuca, NBC News

The Marine Corps Saturday released the names of the three Marines who died in a shooting Thursday night at a base in Quantico, Va.

"We send our prayers and condolences to the families, fellow Marines and friends of the Marines who were lost in this tragic incident," Col. David W. Maxwell, base commander, said in a statement. "Our priority is to take care of and support all of those who are affected by this loss."

A relationship dispute is believed to have been the cause of the shooting. Military officials said Friday that a Marine, identified on Saturday as Sgt. Eusebrio Lopez, opened fire on two of his comrades before shooting himself.

Lopez, 25, of Pacifica, Calif., was a tactics instructor at the school. He joined the Marine Corps in May 2006 and was promoted to his current rank in July 2011. Lopez had served in both Iraq and Afghanistan.

Lance Cpl. Sara Castromata, 19, of Oakley, Calif., served as a warehouse clerk. She joined the Marine Corps in December 2011, and was promoted to her current rank in February 2013.

Cpl. Jacob Wooley, 23, of Guntown, Miss., was a field radio operator. He joined the Marine Corps in February 2010 and was promoted to his current rank in July 2012. Wooley was ?loud and hilarious,? according to a classmate, and had thought about becoming a preacher, The Washington Post reported.

?All the young people loved him and thought of him as a fine person. I guess he was in the wrong place at the wrong time, is what it sounds like," his great-aunt, Jean Luker, told the Post.

The names of the victims were withheld for 24 hours following the notification of the last next of kin. The last relative was notified before 10 p.m. on Friday, base spokesman Lt. Agustin Solivan told NBC News in an email on Saturday.

The incident remains under investigation by the Naval Criminal Investigative Service.

Military police and Prince William County, Va., sheriffs responded at about 10:30 p.m. local time on Thursday after reports that shots had been fired, Maxwell said at a press conference on Friday.

Responders found one victim dead on the scene, a Marine official said on Friday. Two more bodies were later found when authorities entered the barracks.

?This is a truly tragic loss again for the Marine Corps, which has had a number of tragic losses in the last couple of weeks,? Maxwell said.

A message on the base?s Facebook page cautioned residents to stay inside their homes with their doors locked as the situation developed on Thursday evening. An emergency alert system was also used to notify base personnel.

The base returned to normal operations at 2:30 a.m., Maxwell said on Friday.

Blocking an inflammation pathway prevents cardiac fibrosis, study suggests

Mar. 21, 2013 ? New research from UC Davis published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences shows that blocking an enzyme that promotes inflammation can prevent the tissue damage following a heart attack that often leads to heart failure.

Led by Nipavan Chiamvimonvat, cardiologist and professor of internal medicine, a team of researchers tested a compound that inhibits the enzyme soluble epoxide hydrolase -- or sEH -- one of the key players in the robust immune-system response that heals tissue following an injury. The enzyme, however, can become counterproductive after a cardiac event.

Chiamvimonvat explained that sEH increases proinflammatory lipid mediators, leading to long-term, heightened inflammatory conditions. It also causes cells, which typically link together and provide the foundation for heart tissue, to overwork. The outcome is scar tissue, or fibrosis, that results in an abnormal relaxation of the heart after each beat, taxing remaining heart muscle as it performs double duty and eventually leading to a decline in the heart's pumping action.

"We often see patients following a heart attack in clinic who initially respond well to current treatments, which address the initial causes of the cardiac event and try to preserve heart function," said Chiamvimonvat, whose research focuses on the biological mechanisms of heart disease. "Over time, though, heart function in some patients continues to worsen and can lead to heart failure. It would be ideal to have new approaches that target the cellular overproduction that leads to heart muscle stiffening and cardiac fibrosis."

Heart failure progressively limits oxygen throughout the body, reducing mobility, respiration and quality of life. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the condition affects 5.7 million people in the U.S. and costs the nation $34.4 billion in health-care services, medications and lost productivity. About half of people who have heart failure die within five years of diagnosis.

Previous research by Chiamvimonvat showed that an sEH inhibitor synthesized in the laboratory of entomology Professor Bruce Hammock can reduce the enlargement of heart muscle cells and associated arrhythmia. For the current study, she conducted a series of experiments to determine if it could also be a potential treatment for fibrosis.

Chiamvimonvat and her team tested the compound on a mouse model for heart attack. Because cardiac fibrosis can also be caused by other long-term cardiac diseases, the compound was also used on a mouse model for the chronic pressure overload commonly seen with hypertension. For both models, one group of mice was given the compound with their drinking water, while another group was not. The animals' heart functions were assessed using echocardiography.

The results showed that the mice receiving treatment had significant decreases in adverse cardiac muscle remodeling following a heart attack or due to chronic pressure overload. Their overall cardiac function also improved. Additional tests performed in Hammock's lab showed significantly reduced inflammatory factors in their systems.

"Our study shines new light on this inflammation pathway and identifies a potential therapeutic target that could greatly expand options for one of the biggest and most difficult-to-treat problems in cardiology," said Javier Lopez, cardiologist, assistant professor of internal medicine and study co-author who developed methods used in the study to quantify fibrotic cells.

The team hopes to test the compound next on a larger animal model as a precursor to human clinical trials.

"This project is part of a long-term, exciting collaboration between two labs dedicated to combining their strengths to benefit human health," said Hammock. "The translational value of our research is significant."

The study received major support from the National Institutes of Health (grant HL85727 and HL85844), a Veterans Administration Merit Review Grant, the Howard Hughes Medical Institute Med-into-Grad Training Program, an NIH-funded Training Grant in Basic and Translational Cardiovascular Science (grant T32 HL86350), the American Heart Association, a Western States Affiliate Predoctoral Fellowship Award, a Fellow-to-Faculty Award from the Sarnoff Cardiovascular Research Foundation and a Harold Amos Medical Faculty Development Award from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation.

Partial support was provided by the National Institute of Environmental Health (grant R37 ES01710), the NIEHS Superfund Basic Research Program (grant P42 ES04699), the NIEHS Center for Children's Environmental Health and Disease Prevention (grant P02 ES11269), a Technology Translational Grant from UC Davis Health System and the American Asthma Society. Hammock is a George and Judy Marcus Senior Fellow of the American Asthma Society. Chiamvimonvat is also affiliated with the VA Northern California Healthcare System.
